Everyone is familiar with fennel; it is fairly common in our daily lives, also known as cumin, and can be used in medicine and cosmetics. Small fennel is also a high-grade spice and health product, with a wide range of uses and large market demand, so its planting prospects are excellent. Although many people grow it now, the yield is not very ideal, so how should fennel be planted and managed to achieve high yield? Come and take a look with the editor.

1. Land selection and fertilization

Fennel likes a humid and cool environment, and its seeds are relatively small, so its ability to break through the soil is relatively poor. Therefore, when planting, choose sandy loam soil that is flat, has deep soil layers, is loose and fertile, and has strong drainage capacity. After selecting the land, fertilization should also be carried out at the same time. Well-rotted organic fertilizer or farmyard manure can be spread on the soil, and then the soil should be deeply plowed. To reduce the harm of pests and diseases during fennel cultivation, weeding and disinfection work are needed, and some disinfectant can be spread on the soil.

2. Preparation before sowing

Before planting, first prepare good seeds. Choose seeds that are plump, yellow-green in color, disease-free, and undamaged. To increase the germination rate and reduce the harm of pests and diseases, seed treatment can be done before sowing. Before sowing, choose a sunny day and sun-dry the seeds for 1-2 days. When sun-drying the seeds, pay attention to turning them so they are heated evenly. Then soak them in salt water to select seeds, remove the floating seeds, and afterward dress the seeds with chemicals to eliminate pathogens on the surface. Before sowing, dress the seeds with zinc fertilizer, which helps achieve uniform emergence.

3. Sowing management

⟦NL>Fennel likes a cool climate, so sowing can be carried out when the soil temperature is below 5°C, and the most suitable sowing time is in the middle of March each year. There are also two sowing methods: drilling and hole sowing. When sowing, control the density; the distance between each plant is best controlled at 15 cm, and the depth at about 5 cm. Generally, hole sowing is chosen because it saves seeds, while drilling requires timely thinning after emergence.

4. Field management

After the seedlings emerge uniformly, timely cultivate and weed, remove weeds promptly, and promote early development of the seedlings. Generally, during the seedling stage, cultivation and weeding are needed 2-3 times, and the depth of cultivation should be increased each time. When the seedlings grow 3-4 true leaves, thin them in time and control the plant spacing at about 5 cm. At the same time, do a good job in fertilizer and water management. Fennel is a plant that likes drought and fears moisture, so special attention should be paid to water, especially after rain, when humidity is high and can easily cause large numbers of plants to die. Therefore, watering is generally chosen in the evening or on cloudy days, do not water before rain, and drain promptly after rain. During the entire growth period, topdressing is generally required 2-3 times. The first time is before flowering, mainly with nitrogen fertilizer; one time is during the grain-filling stage, mainly with phosphorus and potassium fertilizer; the last time is before harvest, when boron fertilizer and calcium fertilizer should be sprayed to improve yield and quality.
