Snow fungus, also known as white wood ear and snow ear, is not only a precious nutritional tonic, but sometimes a tonic for strengthening the body, and has the reputation of “the crown of fungi,” and has long been loved by everyone. However, during the cultivation of snow fungus, rotting bases very easily occur, so what causes snow fungus rotting bases? How should it be prevented and controlled? Follow the editor to learn about it.

I. Causes of Snow Fungus Rotting Bases

1. Carbon dioxide concentration too high

Snow fungus has relatively high temperature requirements during cultivation, and when cultivated in low-temperature seasons, if the temperature is too low, its fruiting bodies cannot differentiate and grow, so some growers make fires indoors to raise the temperature, but forget to ventilate. Although the temperature is suitable, the carbon dioxide concentration indoors also becomes higher and higher, and when it reaches a certain limit, it will cause snow fungus rotting bases.

2. Yellow water droplets accumulating

During the fruiting body differentiation stage of snow fungus, its base will exude “yellow water droplets.” If these “yellow water droplets” are not blown away or wiped dry in time, once they are allowed to accumulate and deposit, they will cause rotting bases and rotting ears.

3. Humidity too high

During the mature stage of snow fungus fruiting bodies, relatively high humidity is needed to promote their maturation, but if humidification is too great and ventilation is not carried out in time, the high-humidity environment will cause rotting bases and rotting ears.

4. Damage by fungal mites

Mites like warm and humid environments and often lurk in rice straw, rice bran, wheat bran, and cottonseed hulls to lay eggs, and the snow fungus cultivation environment is just suitable for their reproduction and growth. Therefore, when the culture material is not thoroughly disinfected and sterilized, fungal mites will parasitize on the snow fungus and the culture material, absorb nutrients, secrete substances harmful to the growth of snow fungus, and cause rotting bases.

5. Spraying water onto the fruiting bodies

We also mentioned earlier that during the growth and development stage of snow fungus fruiting bodies, the humidity requirements are relatively high, so timely humidification is needed, and the best way to humidify is spraying water. If during spraying the water is sprayed directly onto the fruiting bodies and is not wiped dry in time, it will also cause the fruiting bodies to rot at the base.

II. Prevention and Control Methods

During the cultivation of snow fungus, in addition to doing well in management such as ventilation and water spraying, attention should also be paid to temperature. During the growth stage of snow fungus, the suitable temperature should be controlled between 22-25 degrees, and the relative humidity should be controlled at 85%-95%. It should not be too high; if too high, ventilate in time to reduce humidity. If pest damage occurs, promptly spray methamidophos solution or apply it on the covering newspaper to repel or trap and kill them.
