Latest Management Techniques and Methods Tutorial for Yam in the Mid-to-Late Stage
Yam is what we commonly call Chinese yam in our daily lives. It is both a medicinal herb and a vegetable. It has great nutritional value, which is why it is also very popular among many people. When growing yam, its management work is very important. We need to manage it reasonably according to its growth stages, and the mid-to-late stage of yam growth requires special attention. So today, the editor brings you the management techniques for yam in the mid-to-late stage. Let's take a look below!
1. Fertilizer and Water Management
In the mid-to-late stage of yam growth, fertilizer and water management is certainly indispensable. When the stems and leaves of the yam have covered the entire trellis surface, we should apply fertilizer once, mainly urea, generally about 20kg per mu. We can also appropriately apply some potassium fertilizer, or spray an appropriate amount of foliar fertilizer to enhance the stress resistance of the yam and increase yield. Although yam has relatively strong drought tolerance, in order to increase its yield, we should still pay attention to watering during dry weather. However, during rainy days, we should promptly drain accumulated water to avoid waterlogging damage, which could cause the yam to die from accumulated water and lack of oxygen.
2. Pest and Disease Control
In the mid-to-late stage of yam growth, there are also many pests and diseases. Therefore, we should also pay attention to pest and disease control work. The most common pests and diseases include anthracnose and root-knot nematodes. Among them, anthracnose is the most common disease in yam production. We should frequently observe the growth of the yam. If symptoms similar to anthracnose are found, then pesticides should be sprayed promptly for control. In the early stage of anthracnose onset, fungicides such as mancozeb or carbendazim can be used for control, generally spraying once a week, for about three consecutive weeks.
3. Timely Harvesting
In the mid-to-late stage of yam growth, it is usually time for the yam harvest. The yam harvest period is generally from October to the Start of Winter each year. When harvesting, first start from one side of the ridge and dig a pit of about 60 cm square. Then shovel out the soil along the area about 10cm below the ground surface where the yam is located. Until you reach the point at the bottom of the yam trench where the tip of the yam tuber is visible, then use one hand to grasp the upper end of the yam, and with the other hand cut off the lateral roots behind the rhizome, all the way to the roots adhering to the soil layer, so that a complete yam can be removed.
The above is a brief introduction to the management techniques for yam in the mid-to-late stage. The management work in the mid-to-late stage of yam is very important. If managed improperly, it will have a great impact on the yield and quality of the yam, so everyone must pay close attention. That's all for today's introduction.
