Spring is the breeding period for Chinese toon (Toona sinensis). In recent years, the market demand for Chinese toon has been growing larger and larger, and besides being eaten, it is also an excellent tree species for landscaping. So do you know how Chinese toon should be grown from seedlings? Come and take a look with the editor.

1. Seed soaking and sprouting

First, before sowing, try to choose fresh seeds suitable for local planting. After selecting the seeds, they must be soaked and sprouted. The method also varies according to production conditions. Where conditions are poorer, the seeds can be poured into 30-40 degree warm water, soaking while pouring; when the water temperature drops to 25 degrees, replace it with fresh warm water and rub-wash the seeds, then after washing, replace with warm water and soak for 12 hours. After that, remove the seeds, air-dry the moisture, mix them evenly with wet sand, and place them in a greenhouse to sprout. The temperature in the greenhouse must be kept at around 25 degrees. After a week, when one third of the seeds have split white, they can be sown.

2. Sowing at the right time

Chinese toon likes a warm environment and is relatively sensitive to low temperatures. Generally, the temperature for bud germination is 8-12 degrees, and it can grow normally in an environment above 14 degrees, so the suitable sowing period is generally March to April. If the method of sowing and covering with film is used, sowing can be appropriately advanced. When sowing, choose a plot with loose, fertile soil and sufficient sunlight. First water thoroughly to soak the bottom, then rake it level in time, and open furrows at a row spacing of 25×30 cm, requiring a furrow width of 5-6 cm. Generally, the sowing rate per mu is 3-4 kg, ensuring about 15,000 seedlings per mu.

3. Seedling stage management

After sowing, if there is no plastic film covering, they generally break through the soil in one week and reach full seedling emergence in half a month. If the plastic film covering method is used, emergence can be accelerated, but attention must be paid to high-temperature seedling scorching, so after the seedlings emerge, the film must be broken in time, and at the same time the film openings must be pressed firmly. After emergence, the root system of the seedlings is not well developed, and in addition the covering soil is too shallow, so they are afraid of water shortage and low-temperature cold. Therefore, during the three-leaf stage, water once in time, preferably with warm water. When the seedlings grow to more than 5 cm, the amount of watering should be appropriately reduced, and attention should be paid to intertillage and weeding. When they grow to 4-5 leaves, thin the seedlings. After thinning, strengthen fertilizer and water management to cultivate strong seedlings. In summer, Chinese toon is in its vigorous growth period. At this time, combined with watering, apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizer as a top dressing, and at the same time use foliar fertilizer to promote lignification of the seedlings, improve cold resistance, and make the young buds plump.
