Onion cultivation is still very common in China, because of its good taste and rich nutritional value, so it is also welcomed by many people. The generally suitable sowing period for onions is around September, but now planting techniques are becoming more and more advanced, and onions can also be planted in spring. So how should onions be managed when planted in spring? Today the editor brings you the spring management techniques for onions. Let's take a look below!

1. Scientific fertilization

In spring, after the onions turn green again, we should begin fertilizing. This is mainly to provide sufficient growth nutrients for the onion roots and to lay a foundation for the later growth of the aboveground part of the onions. When fertilizing, pay attention to choosing the right fertilizer. The fertilizer is generally mainly decomposed farmyard manure, and then attention should also be paid to controlling the amount of fertilizer applied. Generally, about 1000kg is applied per mu, and at the same time an appropriate amount of superphosphate and potassium sulfate and other fertilizers should be used in combination. If planting with plastic film, then applying an appropriate amount of diammonium sulfate or potassium sulfate per mu is sufficient.

When the onions grow 9 true leaves and the bulbs also begin to expand, then the bulb-promoting fertilizer should begin to be applied. Generally, it should be applied about three times in succession, with ammonium sulfate as the main fertilizer, and the amount per square meter should be kept at about 15kg. During the middle stage of onion bulb expansion, this is the key period for fertilizing onions, and at this time a relatively large amount of fertilizer should be maintained. Then when the onion bulbs begin to expand, attention should be paid to controlling the application of nitrogen fertilizer to avoid onions becoming too leafy and late-maturing. Finally, during the bulb expansion period, an appropriate amount of potassium sulfate should be added; if onions lack potassium, then their storability will decline as a result.

2. Timely watering

In spring, we should also water the onions with an appropriate amount of green-returning water. However, pay attention to the timing of watering the green-returning water; it must not be too early, otherwise it will cause the soil temperature to drop. This is very unfavorable to the growth of onions, but it also must not be too late, otherwise it will inhibit the growth of onions and cause the onion leaf tips to dry up. Then when the onion bulbs expand, water control and seedling hardening should be done well. The time should be flexibly adjusted according to the soil environment, climate, and the actual growth conditions of the onions. For example, if the soil is clayey and the terrain is low-lying and rainy, then the seedling hardening time should be appropriately extended. This is mainly to promote the expansion and transformation of onions toward the bulbs, and it takes about ten days.

When planting onions, if the color of the mature tubular leaves of the onions begins to turn dark green, and the leaf mesophyll is thick and the waxiness of the leaves begins to increase, then the seedling hardening can basically be ended. After the onion seedling hardening period ends, water about once every five days, mainly to promote the expansion speed of the onion bulbs. If onion plants lodge, then watering should be stopped. This prevents the storability of onion bulbs from declining after harvest and affecting economic benefits.

The above is a brief introduction to onion spring management techniques. That is all for today's introduction. This article is for reference only, and I hope it can help everyone!
