How to grow tatsoi? Check out the latest planting techniques and methods tutorial
Tatsoi is also called chrysanthemum greens, and its tender stems and leaves are used for food. Its flavor has a special chrysanthemum fragrance. At present, it is cultivated in small amounts in various places in southern China. So how should tatsoi be grown? Follow the editor to learn about it.
1. Land preparation and sowing
Before sowing, apply sufficient base fertilizer, mainly decomposed farmyard manure, and at the same time plow deeply and harrow finely, making it into flat beds. When sowing, mix the seeds evenly with fine sand and broadcast them, then cover with a layer of fine soil about 0.5 cm thick. After sowing, cover with a shade net and water thoroughly. In early spring, the temperature is relatively low and there is a lot of rain, so it is best to cover with plastic film to keep warm and retain moisture. Generally, seedlings emerge in about 10 days. At this time, remove the shade net and plastic film in time. When there are 2-3 leaves, they can be transplanted to the field.
2. Transplanting and setting out
Tatsoi is afraid of waterlogging and avoids stagnant water, so when cultivating it, deep furrows and raised ridges should be used to facilitate smooth drainage. In addition, as a perennial herbaceous plant, it requires a lasting supply of soil nutrients, so sandy loam soil with convenient drainage and irrigation and loose, breathable texture should be selected for planting. Before setting out, sufficient base fertilizer should also be applied, with 2000-2500 kg of decomposed farmyard manure applied per mu. After fertilizing, plow deeply and harrow the soil, and prepare the beds. Then select robust plants free of pests and diseases, and choose an overcast day or a sunny afternoon for setting out, with reasonable close planting. After setting out, water thoroughly to help the seedlings recover.
3. Fertilizer and water management
Five days after tatsoi is set out, it needs one topdressing to promote tillering, and afterward topdress once every 7-10 days, using a combination of farmyard manure, compound fertilizer, and urea. In summer, during high temperature and drought, water in time, but never allow water to accumulate in the field. In the rainy season, pay attention to drainage and waterlogging prevention to avoid root rot. Tatsoi has relatively strong branching ability, and side branches sprout relatively quickly, so its demand for fertilizer is relatively large. When planting in poor soil, the number of topdressings should be appropriately increased.
4. Field management
Before the plants close the rows, cultivate and weed to prevent soil compaction and help root growth and development. Before winter, after harvesting the old stubble of wheat straw, it is suitable to loosen the soil and earth up the plants. Tatsoi grows vigorously and has strong branching ability, so necessary pruning must be carried out to control plant growth, promote side bud branching, facilitate field management, and enhance ventilation and light penetration. Also before the plants close the rows, harvest and pinch the tops to promote side bud germination and increase yield.
