During yam cultivation, dead plants are a fairly common phenomenon, especially in continuous cropping fields, where dead plants are particularly severe, bringing serious economic losses to growers. So what causes dead yam plants? How should they be controlled? Come along with the editor to learn about it.

1. Brown spot disease

This disease mainly harms leaves and stems. The lesions on the leaves are round or oval, grayish white to dark gray in the center with dark brown edges, and later small black dots appear on the diseased parts. The lesions on the stems are irregular in shape, grayish white in the center and black around the edges; the colored lesions will merge into patches, causing the whole plant to turn black and die. For the control of brown spot disease, at the early stage of the disease, drench the roots with 70% thiophanate-methyl 1000-fold solution or 80% allicin 3000-fold solution for a relatively good effect.

2. Fusarium wilt

At the early stage of this disease, the main symptom is spindle-shaped brown lesions appearing at the base of the stem. The lesions cause the epidermis at the base of the stem to rot, the upper leaves to yellow and fall off, and the vines to wither and die. The interior of the diseased stem turns brown. When the tuberous roots are infected, round to irregular brown lesions form around the lenticels, and finally the plant withers and dies from this symptom. For wilt disease, farmers can drench the roots with 50% chloroisobromine cyanuric acid 1000-fold solution, or 40% thiophanate-methyl sulfur suspension concentrate 600-fold solution, or 70% mancozeb 500-fold solution.

3. Brown rot

This disease mainly harms the tubers of yams. After the tubers are infected, the diseased parts show rotten, irregular brown spots that are slightly sunken; when cut open, discoloration of the diseased parts can be seen, and in severe cases all tissue around the diseased parts rots completely. For this disease, vegetable growers can drench the roots with 70% thiophanate-methyl 1000-fold solution or 80% allicin 3000-fold solution for control, once every 7-10 days, 2-3 times in succession, for thorough control.
