What are the precautions for planting oats? Read this article to understand the latest key points
Oats are a kind of coarse grain with relatively high nutritional value, and their usability is fairly wide, but the one we most often hear about must be oat flakes, and most of what we usually call flour is also made from oats, so today let us understand what issues need attention when planting oats in order to ensure their yield and quality.
1. Growing environment
Oats have relatively strong resistance, so oats can be planted in ordinary land, but for high yield it is best to choose a plot with relatively fertile soil and relatively loose soil texture. When preparing the land, try to plow deeply and make the soil texture as fine as possible, which has a certain preventive effect on oat lodging. The temperature for oat growth should preferably be controlled at around 15 to 20 degrees, which can ensure the plumpness of the oat grains and reduce flat grains.
2. Seed treatment
Before sowing, seed treatment should be carried out. Dry the seeds in the sun for two or three days, which can have a sterilizing effect and improve the germination rate of the seeds. Then mix the seeds with chemicals aimed at some oat problems, which can prevent many diseases in advance. After the seed treatment is completed, sowing can begin.
3. Sowing density
When sowing, first estimate the area of the plot. The planting density should be neither too large nor too small. If the density is too high, some oat seedlings will be shaded and unable to carry out photosynthesis, causing the oat grains to be not plump and reducing yield. At the same time, the humidity in the oat field will increase and ventilation will be poor, so it is very easy to cause lodging across the whole field. In this case, both the yield and quality of oats will be greatly affected.
4. Fertilizer and water management
Sufficient nutrients and water are an important factor for high oat yield. During the seedling growth period, oats generally need an average amount of water and also average fertility, so when the seedlings grow to 5 to 10 cm, fertilizer needs to be supplemented once. However, during the jointing stage, oats need a large amount of water and nutrients. At this time, timely topdressing must be carried out, otherwise the joints will be fewer and thin, and the resulting ears will certainly be small; even if the ears are large, they cannot be supported, and if the ears are small, the yield certainly will not be high. Therefore, this fertilization is very critical. The last fertilization is at the flowering and ear-setting stage, which can promote the plumpness of the grains and improve the quality of the oats.
5. Disease prevention
⟦NL>The most common diseases of oats include smut, red leaf disease and stem rust. These diseases generally occur in the middle and late stages of oat growth. Chemical seed dressing before sowing can play a certain role in preventing and controlling these diseases, but during periods when many diseases occur, pay attention to observing changes in the oat field. Once they appear, promptly go to an agricultural chemical store to buy targeted chemicals for spraying.
6. Weeding methods
For weeding during the oat growth period, intertillage weeding is generally used. Carry out the first weeding when oats grow to 10 to 15 cm, which can enhance the permeability of the soil and prevent diseases. The second weeding should wait until jointing begins. At this time, the soil can maintain a certain amount of moisture, enough to satisfy the oats until flowering and ear setting. Finally, one more weeding can be carried out after jointing is completed.
7. Timely harvest
The season when oats mature is generally in August each year. The grains cannot all mature completely at the same time, so harvesting is generally done when 80 percent of the grains on the oat plants have hardened and gradually turned yellow-green. After harvesting, the oats should be sun-dried and threshed. After all the grains are threshed, dry them in the sun, and finally remove the husks, then they can be packed and stored.
