Wheat is a traditional crop in our country. During wheat cultivation, pest and disease infestations are often encountered, and these pests and diseases seriously affect wheat quality and yield, bringing huge economic losses to farmers. Understanding the characteristics of pests and diseases and their control methods is an important technique for achieving high and superior wheat yields. Below, Qinnongwang brings you the common pests and diseases of wheat and their control methods. Let's take a look.

1. Wheat powdery mildew

Wheat powdery mildew occurs from the seedling stage to the heading stage, mainly damaging wheat leaves, stems and ears. In the early stage of the disease, small white spots begin to appear on the leaves. As the disease develops, the small white spots gradually spread and become round white mold spots. On the surface of the mold spots there is a layer of white powder. In the later stage, the mold spots become gray or brown lesions and carry small black granular spots.

Control methods: choose varieties with strong disease resistance for planting, deeply plow and disinfect the soil before planting to reduce sources of inoculum, keep planting density reasonable and not too dense, spray with triadimefon in the early stage of the disease, and promptly remove and clean up diseased leaves.

2. Wheat rust

Wheat rust mainly damages leaves, leaf sheaths, stems and ears. Depending on the affected part, it is also called by different names, such as leaf rust and stem rust, but the nature is the same. When the disease occurs, yellow or brown spore masses appear on the affected parts. These spores spread continuously through the air, spread quickly, and affect an extremely wide area. In the later stage, the color of the spore masses gradually turns black. It has a great impact on wheat, affecting wheat growth and development, making the grains shriveled and light, and affecting yield and quality.

Control methods: likewise choose varieties with strong disease resistance, deeply plow, disinfect and sterilize the soil before planting, spray with tebuconazole and diniconazole in the early stage of the disease, and when the disease is severe, in addition to spraying the affected wheat fields, also spray the surrounding areas together to prevent the disease from spreading.

3. Aphids

Aphids mainly suck sap from leaves, stems and ears. After feeding, yellow small spots appear on the affected parts. As they continue to feed, the entire affected leaves, stems and ears gradually wither, and finally the whole plant dies. By sucking sap, they affect wheat photosynthesis, leading to poor nutrient transport in the plant, and ultimately making the grains shriveled and light, affecting yield.

Control methods: spray pesticides, and selective pesticides that are safe for natural enemies can be used. This can both protect the natural enemies of aphids from harm and kill aphids. As aphids gradually decrease, until the ratio of natural enemies to wheat aphids is less than 1:150, then do not spray pesticides any more.

The above are the common diseases of wheat and their control methods brought to you by Qinnongwang. Only by understanding the characteristics of wheat pests and diseases can you identify which pest or disease it is, so that you can prescribe the right remedy. We hope this can help you.
