As one of the most important grain and cash crops in northern China, wheat is grown across a large area in the north, and cultivating wheat has relatively high economic value. Farmers who grow wheat on a large scale work hard for a whole year and rely on the yield to earn their own economic returns. But many times the yield is less than satisfactory, so how should wheat be grown to achieve high yields? Today the editor has brought you the key points to note in wheat cultivation, so let's take a look below!

1. Soil

Before planting, you must first choose good soil. Fertile soil with a deep, loose, soft layer is the most suitable soil for wheat growth. Then plow the soil once to make it looser, and do a good job of levelling and sterilising it. After ploughing, expose it to the sun for 5-7 days, then apply sufficient base fertiliser. Farmyard manure can be used as base fertiliser; mix it evenly with the soil to enhance soil fertility.

2. Seed selection

The variety is the foundation for ensuring high yields. When choosing a variety to plant, choose one that is free of disease and pests, has strong disease resistance and high yield. Choosing the right variety achieves twice the result with half the effort. If you are not sure whether it carries pathogens, then before planting you should soak and disinfect the seeds, or spray the seeds with chemicals such as carbendazim to kill pathogens, deciding the dosage according to the quantity.

3. Sowing

Sowing time also has requirements, because wheat seeds need certain conditions to germinate and emerge, so the sowing time must be determined according to changes in the weather. Sowing too early prevents wheat from adapting to the surrounding environment and affects the germination and emergence rate, while sowing too late may make the seeds prone to pests and diseases. Also pay attention to the sowing rate, controlling the sowing amount according to the planting area, and do not plant too densely.

4. Preventing lodging

Wheat is a relatively tall crop, and when it grows to a certain height it is prone to lodging, so lodging must be prevented. You can choose lodging-resistant varieties, or prune the wheat before it gets particularly tall, do a good job of controlling excessive growth, and spraying the plants with chemicals such as paclobutrazol can effectively prevent it. Applying more jointing fertiliser can control the formation of dropped ears and helps increase wheat weight.

5. Water

Wheat is neither drought-tolerant nor waterlogging-tolerant, so we must do a good job of field drainage and irrigation. When wheat grows to the grain-filling stage, that is when it needs water most. At this time we must ensure the water wheat needs and keep the soil in a moist state. But in continuous rainy weather, the accumulated water in the field must be drained promptly, otherwise too much standing water may cause root rot and affect nutrient uptake and transport.

6. Disease control

Disease control is a problem that all farmers need to take seriously, and advance prevention work must be done well. Spraying an appropriate amount of foliar fertiliser on the leaves can effectively prevent and control pests and diseases, and can also replenish water and increase yield. Strengthen field management, spray and disinfect wheat with chemicals regularly and in fixed amounts, and handle diseases promptly when found to prevent further deterioration.

Many farmer friends feel they have ways to prevent and control various pests and diseases, so they do not do good prevention work, but in fact when pests and diseases occur, the wheat has already suffered a certain amount of damage and loss. So when planting, management should be strengthened, which can not only promote growth but also effectively prevent and control pests and diseases. That is all for today's introduction.
