Broad bean, also called Luohan bean, fava bean, and orchid bean, is a crop used as food, vegetable, feed, and green manure. It is also a food that many friends like to eat, and it is an important legume plant in the south with extremely high economic value. When planting, to achieve high yield, fertilization is indispensable, so how should broad beans be fertilized? Let's take a look.

1. Fertilizer requirement characteristics

Broad bean is a plant with a relatively large fertilizer requirement. According to data, for every 100 kg of broad bean seeds produced, about 7-8 kg of pure nitrogen, 2 kg of phosphorus pentoxide, and 5 kg of potassium oxide are consumed. At the same time, its demand for various nutrients differs at each growth stage. It absorbs less in the early growth stage, but absorbs a large amount during the flowering and podding stage. The nutrients absorbed during the flowering and podding stage account for about 50% of the entire growth period. If the supply of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer is insufficient at this time, it will affect the later yield, so for high-yield broad bean planting, fertilization is extremely critical.

2. Apply seed dressing fertilizer well

Before sowing, a seed fertilizer is generally applied once. Generally, when sowing, 2 g of ammonium molybdate is used to dress each 1 kg of seeds, so that the seeds sprout as soon as possible, and it can also promote the growth and development of the broad bean root system and root nodules, speed up seedling growth, help cultivate strong seedlings, improve cold resistance, and achieve increased yield.

3. Apply sufficient base fertilizer

When sowing, sufficient base fertilizer should be applied. The base fertilizer provides the nutritional supply for the entire growth period of broad beans, and its application amount accounts for more than 80% of the total fertilization amount. Apply 30-50 kg of calcium phosphate and 7-15 kg of potassium sulfate per mu. When applying base fertilizer, concentrating it at the broad bean roots can increase yield by 20%. At the same time, apply 1000-2000 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer or farmyard manure as base fertilizer, which can be done in combination with plowing, and mix it evenly with the soil. This can increase microbial activity, improve soil fertility, and produce a relatively good yield-increasing effect.

4. Timely topdressing

The topdressing stages are mainly the seedling stage, branching stage, and flowering and podding stage. Apply nitrogen fertilizer at the seedling stage, with 6-8 qian of ammonium bicarbonate or 2-3 kg of urea per mu. Apply it diluted with water to avoid burning the seedling roots due to high fertilizer concentration. When applying, the plants should have grown 3-5 true leaves. Fertilizing at the seedling stage can make the plants grow early and quickly and promote more branching. When the plants begin to branch, apply 8-10 kg of urea per mu as topdressing. At the flowering and podding stage, apply 8-10 kg of ammonium bicarbonate per mu, also diluted with water for irrigation, so that the plants bloom and set pods more and the yield is increased.

5. Foliar fertilization

In addition to topdressing, the plants also need foliar fertilization. Foliar fertilization is generally foliar spraying. When entering the full flowering stage, spray a 1% urea solution and a 0.2% boric acid solution. This can extend the function of the leaves so that photosynthesis can normally synthesize nutrients, preventing premature aging of the plants due to insufficient nutrients. During the grain-filling stage, spray once more with 1% urea solution and 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution, which can achieve an obvious yield-increasing effect.
