How to Grow Adzuki Beans? A Detailed Guide to the Latest Planting Methods
Adzuki bean is commonly known as the red rice bean. It is an annual herbaceous plant of the Vigna genus. Many people always confuse adzuki beans with red beans, because they are very similar in appearance, and their effects and functions are also largely the same as those of red beans. It is a plant used both as medicine and food, and it is cultivated throughout our country. So is there any difference between adzuki beans and red beans in terms of planting methods? And how are they grown? Let us take a closer look below.
1. Land preparation and bed making
Adzuki beans cannot be planted in continuous cropping, so the previous crop in the planting site must not be a legume crop. It is best to use farmland where crops such as wheat, corn, or sorghum have been grown. The soil fertility of the planting site does not need to be too high, the drainage system must be well developed, and it must also be favorable for irrigation. Most importantly, there must be sufficient sunlight. Leguminous plants all have very vigorous vitality. When preparing the land, it is still necessary to clean up debris in the field, which can reduce the harm of diseases and insect pests. Next, level the ground, dig water ditches, make the beds well, and then you can wait to sow.
2. Sowing methods
The sowing time of adzuki beans is greatly related to the climate of the planting site, but when growing adzuki beans in our country, sowing can generally be carried out from early April to May. The sowing methods for adzuki beans are generally drilling or hole sowing. For drilling, the distance between each row is generally about 35 cm, and then seeds are evenly scattered at intervals of 25 cm, covered with soil, and buried for sowing. For hole sowing, holes are opened at intervals of 30 cm, then 4 to 5 seeds are scattered into each hole, and finally soil is covered over them to bury the seeds and wait for seedlings to emerge.
3. Field management
After sowing, we need to remove weeds in the field. Generally, quizalofop-p-ethyl can be mixed with water and sprayed on the weeds in the field. At this time, the weeds are generally about 10 cm tall; otherwise they cannot be completely removed, and manual weeding will still be needed later. In order to prevent adzuki beans from lodging and to promote the rapid growth of adzuki bean seedlings, we need to carry out at least three rounds of intertillage and hilling. During the growing period of adzuki beans, the water requirement is relatively large, so we should irrigate reasonably to avoid affecting yield and quality. Finally, we should apply topdressing scientifically and must not apply excessive nitrogen fertilizer. In the early stage, apply a small amount of nitrogen fertilizer to promote seedling growth, and in the later stage, apply potassium fertilizer, phosphorus fertilizer, boron fertilizer, and the like. In order to avoid excessive vegetative growth of the plants, we also need to spray paclobutrazol to inhibit growth and increase the pod-setting rate.
4. Pest and disease control
The most common diseases of adzuki beans include rust, brown spot disease, shrinkage disease, and lodging disease. We can use mancozeb solution and carbendazim respectively for control, and at the same time enhance the immunity of the plants through chemical regulation methods. The main insect pests of adzuki beans are aphids and red spider mites, which can be killed with imidacloprid water-dispersible granules and Zhongbao acaricide emulsifiable concentrate respectively.
The above are the planting methods for adzuki beans. I believe everyone now has a certain understanding of how to grow adzuki beans. That is all for today's sharing. If you still have other questions, you can consult us.
