Adzuki bean, also known as red bean or small bean, is an annual erect herbaceous plant in the legume family. Adzuki beans are very rich in nutrients, containing starch, protein and various other substances, and have extremely high medicinal and edible value. The cultivation history of adzuki beans in China is very long, and the planting area is also very wide. So how exactly do you grow adzuki beans? Below, the editor brings you the planting techniques for adzuki beans, let's take a look!

1. Variety Selection

Choosing an excellent variety is the key to ensuring healthy growth and high yield of adzuki beans. When selecting seeds, we should pay attention to observing the appearance of the seeds, and choose varieties with large grains, bright color, high yield and strong disease resistance. Then select the seeds, removing shriveled seeds, seeds with wounds and impurities. Ensure the purity of the seeds, then put the seeds under the sun to bake for about 3 days, and after drying, coat the seeds, using agents such as Shilinshen for seed dressing. Eliminate the pathogens on the seeds, improve disease resistance, then air-dry them and prepare for sowing.

2. Land Preparation and Fertilization

Adzuki beans have relatively strong growth ability and do not have high requirements for soil, but if you want high yield, you should still try to choose sandy soil with normal drainage and irrigation, strong water and fertilizer retention capacity and humus. The previous crop should not be a legume, to avoid serious soil-borne diseases, affecting the root development of adzuki beans and reducing yield and quality. The soil-emerging ability of adzuki bean seedlings is relatively weak, so land preparation should be done well, leveling and fine harrowing, forming ridges and pressing, to improve the soil's water retention capacity. Then apply sufficient base fertilizer according to the soil area and fertility, with the base fertilizer mainly being decomposed farmyard manure and compound fertilizer, to ensure that the nutritional needs of adzuki bean growth are met.

3. Timely Sowing

Adzuki beans are more suitable for growing in a warm environment. After sowing, the temperature should not be lower than 8 degrees, and the optimal temperature for germination is about 15-16 degrees. So we should pay attention to the sowing time and must not sow too early. When sowing, the average soil temperature should not be lower than 15 degrees at the lowest. Generally, around May to June each year is the best sowing period. When sowing, ridge cultivation is mainly used, with plant spacing controlled at about 12 cm, and the depth of the sowing hole should not exceed 4 cm. Pay attention to sowing density to prevent excessive density from affecting the middle and late growth of adzuki beans. After sowing, the soil should be pressed and stepped firm.

4. Field Management

After the seedlings emerge completely, thinning should be done in time, generally when the seedlings grow their first true leaf, following the principle of keeping the strong and removing the weak. Then before flowering, do a good job of cultivating and weeding, carrying out ridging and earthing up, to prevent weeds from competing for the nutrients needed for adzuki bean growth and to prevent plants from lodging. Then at the early flowering stage, topdressing should be done appropriately, using agents such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate mixed with water and sprayed on the leaves. Then keep the soil moist and water timely, but pay attention to the amount, do not water too much; when there is too much water or in rainy weather, pay attention to drainage work. Prevent water accumulation from causing root rot and hindering plant growth, reducing yield and quality.

The above is a brief introduction to adzuki bean planting techniques. The planting management of adzuki beans is actually relatively simple, but everyone should not manage them too loosely. Focus on the prevention and control of pests and diseases. Common pests and diseases include root rot, aphids, etc., which can cause varying degrees of damage to various parts of the plant and seriously affect the growth of adzuki beans. That's all for today's introduction. This article is for reference only and I hope it can help everyone!
