The Latest Peanut Seed Storage Methods and Key Technical Points
Peanut is a very important oilseed and food crop in China, with a fairly wide distribution range across the country. Nowadays, many people grow it on a large scale, and most growers set aside some plants for seed purposes, then harvest them after maturity in preparation for the next sowing. In fact, unless you sow the seeds right after harvesting, peanut seeds need to be stored properly. Below, the editor brings you the storage methods for peanut growing. Let's take a look!
1. Preparation Before Storage
Before storing peanut seeds, they should be fully dried in the sun, and the moisture content of the seeds must not exceed 10%. Professional data surveys have shown that when the moisture content of peanut seeds is kept below 10%, their storage capacity is relatively strong, and they can still maintain good germination ability even at temperatures below zero. If the moisture content is high, the respiration of peanut seeds will gradually intensify, causing loss of nutrients and moisture, and the heat will also rise sharply. This makes the seeds highly prone to rotting, various diseases and pests, and loss of germination ability.
2. Storage Containers and Location
The storage location for peanut seeds should have good ventilation and drainage capacity, with a dry floor that does not leak water, and no rats or similar pests. The main storage containers should be woven bags or other bags with strong permeability; airtight, non-breathable plastic bags should not be used. Otherwise, the air inside the bag tends to become sealed off, leading to insufficient oxygen, causing peanut seeds to undergo anaerobic respiration and resulting in poisoning of the seed embryo. In addition, the carbon dioxide, moisture and heat produced by seed respiration are difficult to dissipate, causing the seed temperature to rise, leading to mildew and loss of germination ability.
3. Storage Methods
We need to reasonably adjust the storage method according to the intended use. If the peanut seeds are for food and industrial use, then storage is generally based on shelled kernels; on the contrary, peanuts for seed use are mainly stored as pods. After the pods are dried in the sun, they are shelled to remove the kernels, then the kernels are placed into storage containers and put into the storage room. First, a layer of matting is placed on top of the storage bags, and then a layer of burlap is covered on top. The matting can not only effectively keep warmth and moisture, but also prevent people from stepping on the seeds when walking around, while the burlap can absorb water vapor and prevent excessive humidity.
4. Precautions
Pesticides, chemical fertilizers and similar substances should not be present in the storage room, because the volatile and corrosive nature of pesticides and chemical fertilizers is very strong; once volatilized, they will have a very large impact on the seed cells and seed embryos in the air. Before storage, we should improve the quality of the seeds by cleaning off impurities on the seed coat and removing immature, shriveled seeds. Then during storage, the specific condition of the seeds should be checked frequently, such as whether they have become damp or are threatened by insects or rodents. This avoids reducing the germination rate of the seeds. If any abnormal situation occurs, it should be dealt with promptly to improve storage safety.
The above is a brief introduction to peanut seed storage methods. Peanut seed storage methods are mainly based on pods and kernels, and when storing, we must control the storage method well according to the intended use to ensure the germination ability of the seeds.
