Peanut Seed Rot: Causes and Remedies
Peanut is a grain and oil crop with excellent edible value and economic value, and good prospects for cultivation. It is widely grown in China, but when planting, peanut seed rot is a problem that causes growers no end of trouble. So how should peanut seed rot be remedied? Let's take a look.
I. Symptoms of rotten seedlings
Peanut seed rot shows up as uneven emergence or missing seedlings. After scraping away the soil at the base, the seeds can be seen swollen with water and rotting, or the main root is deformed, with lesions turning brown or black and rotting, and the cotyledons rotting and turning yellow, producing a thick ooze.
II. Causes
There are many causes of peanut seed rot. First, the temperature is too low; peanut seeds germinate at 25-37 degrees, and once the temperature is too low, seed rot occurs. Second, the soil moisture is too low; when sowing, if the relative soil humidity is greater than 70%, the oxygen supply is insufficient, which aggravates seed rot, and sowing after hot ploughing and drying for more than two days can also cause mild seed rot. Third, sowing too deep; for open-field peanut sowing the depth should be 5 cm, and for film-mulched sowing it should be 3 cm. If sown at 6 cm, seed rot easily occurs, and if sown at more than 7 cm, the seed rot rate reaches 90%.
III. Remedial measures
1. Check seedlings and fill in gaps
For ordinary peanut fields with seed rot, scrape away the soil in time to check the seedlings. If the seedling gap rate in the field is below 10%, there is no need to reseed; if the seedling gap rate is around 10%-30%, then sprout the seeds and reseed in time; for fields with a seedling gap rate above 60%, the crop should be destroyed in time, and then, seizing the farming season, plough in time and sow with film mulch.
2. Turning weak seedlings into strong ones
For weak seedlings with poor root development, plant growth regulators can be used to promote the weak seedlings to become strong and to cultivate robust young seedlings. Per mu, use 5 grams of 0.1% brassinolide diluted in 30 kg of water, applying it as a foliar spray to promote the weak seedlings to become strong.
3. Releasing seedlings
In peanut fields sown first and then covered with plastic film, when the peanut seedlings push through the soil, release the seedlings in time and press the holes firmly with soil.
4. Disease control
Peanut seedlings are relatively weak and have poor disease resistance, so once root rot or stem base rot occurs, use carbendazim as a root drench for control as early as possible.
