Peanut is an important oil and grain crop in China, and uneven emergence often occurs during peanut cultivation, seriously affecting farmers' income. Uneven emergence in peanut sowing is mainly caused by three reasons. Let's take a look together with the editor at the common peanut sowing mistakes.

1. Sowing time

Spring-sown peanuts have a longer growth period, so medium-to-late maturing varieties are suitable. Based on practical experience, sowing spring peanuts ten days earlier or ten days later makes little difference to the final yield. Therefore, farmers are advised to sow according to local temperature and sow after the temperature has stabilized, preferably after the soil temperature has stabilized above 15°C. In addition, when sowing, pay attention to the weather forecast and check the local weather changes within 15 days to see whether there will be a significant temperature drop in the coming half month. Also pay attention to rainy days. If it rains after sowing, peanuts are highly likely to rot.

2. Sowing depth

Peanut sowing mostly uses hole sowing, drill sowing, and mechanical sowing. Whether sowing by hand or by machine, the sowing depth should follow the principle of “do not sow deep when dry, do not sow shallow when wet.” Generally, a sowing depth of about 5 cm is suitable. When the soil temperature is low, the humidity is high, and the soil is sticky and heavy, sowing should be appropriately shallow, but it must not be shallower than 3 cm; for loose sandy soil, sowing can be appropriately deep. However, it must not exceed 7 cm at the deepest. For general soil, keeping the sowing depth at 3-7 cm is suitable.

3. Seed dressing

To prevent and control pests and diseases, many farmers now have the habit of dressing seeds before sowing. This is a good habit, but if seed dressing is done improperly, it may break the peanut seed coat, which can also cause uneven emergence. This is because the peanut seed coat is very thin. If the germ is damaged, it will affect the emergence rate. In addition, when dressing seeds by hand, be careful not to use too much water, and stir gently during the mixing process to avoid breaking the seed coat.
