Sesame comes in black and white varieties; white sesame is mostly used for food, while black sesame is mostly used for medicinal purposes. White sesame has an extremely high oil content and a rich, mellow aroma. The oil pressed from it can be used both raw and heated, and the foods made from it are world-renowned. So how is white sesame grown? Let's find out together.

1. Site Selection and Fertilization

When planting, you should choose a field far from polluted areas, with slightly elevated and flat terrain, deep soil layers, fertile soil, and good water conservancy conditions with convenient irrigation and drainage. Before sowing, carry out intensive and careful cultivation so that the soil is fine and level. In addition, because sesame has a shallow root system, fertilizer should be applied shallowly; applying fertilizer together with sowing or shallow base fertilizer application gives better results. Generally, apply 50 kg of superphosphate, 8-10 kg of potassium sulfate, and 30-40 kg of cake fertilizer and organic fertilizer as base fertilizer.

2. Sowing and Raising Seedlings

White sesame sowing should be done no later than late June. Generally, drilling (row sowing) is suitable, with the sowing rate controlled at about 1 jin per mu. Before sowing, seeds can be treated with chemicals for seed dressing, which gives better pest-killing and sterilization results. After emergence, thin the seedlings in good time when the seedlings have grown to one leaf and one heart, and final thinning when they have three pairs of true leaves. During the true leaf stage, you can cultivate and weed, generally 2-3 times. In high temperatures, chemical herbicides can be used to prevent weed infestation. At the last cultivation, earth up the soil around the roots to prevent lodging.

3. Field Management

In the late full-bloom stage of sesame, promptly pinch off the growing tips of the top and side branches. After topping, promptly spray once with chlorothalonil, combined with an appropriate amount of a mixed solution of borax and monopotassium phosphate, to supplement nutrients, delay leaf senescence, reduce disease, improve photosynthetic efficiency, and increase yield and quality. For pests and diseases, adopt integrated control methods combining biological, physical, and chemical control. In addition, note that no chemicals may be used within 10 days before harvest to avoid excessive pesticide residues.

4. Timely Harvesting

When the sesame plant's leaves have basically all fallen off, about one-third of the lower capsules on some plants have slightly split, the middle and upper capsules of the whole plant are slightly yellow, and few seeds show their original color when opened, it is time to harvest and bundle promptly. At harvest, cut near the capsules with a sickle, and do not take the roots, so as to avoid bringing soil and affecting quality.
