Main production areas of pomegranates in China
China's pomegranates were brought back and cultivated more than 2,000 years ago when Zhang Qian of the Han Dynasty was sent on a mission to the Western Regions, but the place from which they were introduced was not Iran, but Uzbekistan. They were first planted in Xinjiang, China, and then spread throughout the country. At present, China already has eight major pomegranate production areas (some say six major production areas), including Yicheng in Shandong; Lintong, Qianxian and Sanyuan in Shaanxi; Linxian in Henan; Huaiyuan, Xiaoshan, Suixi and Chaoxian in Anhui; Huili in Sichuan; Mengzi, Qiaojia, Jianshui and Chenggong in Yunnan; Hotan and Yecheng in Xinjiang; and Suzhou, Nanjing, Xuzhou and Pixian in Jiangsu, and other places, all of which have large-scale plantings. According to the geography, climate and ecological conditions of pomegranate production areas, the main distribution areas of pomegranates in China can be divided into 8 cultivation areas.
