Black Beauty watermelon is one of the common watermelon varieties, oval in shape, with pure black rind and red flesh that is tender and juicy, and extremely popular among people. So do you know where Black Beauty watermelon comes from? Let's take a look together at the production areas of Black Beauty watermelon!

What are the production areas of Black Beauty watermelon?

Black Beauty watermelon has many production areas in China, the most famous being Nanning in Guangxi, Hainan, Yinchuan in Ningxia and Weinan in Shaanxi.

How to select a Black Beauty watermelon?

1. Look: A good Black Beauty watermelon has pitch-black skin with a certain luster, and the stem end and blossom end are sunken inward, with the vine stem pressing down close to the rind. Therefore, choose one with a thick, green stem end and a shape that is relatively pointed at both ends.

2. Touch: A good melon feels smooth and hard, while one whose rind is sticky or soft is somewhat inferior.

3. Weigh: The riper the watermelon, the lighter it generally is. So among watermelons of the same size, the lighter one is better, while an overly heavy melon is not yet ripe enough.

4. Listen: Place the watermelon in your hands and gently flick it with your finger. A crisp "dong, dong" sound means it is a ripe melon; a "tu, tu" sound means it is a melon of fairly good ripeness; a "pu, pu" sound means it is an overripe melon; and a "da, da" sound means it is an unripe melon.

What are the common types of watermelon?

1. Huang Xiaoyu: An extremely early-maturing, yellow-fleshed small-fruited gift watermelon, with a tall round fruit, a single fruit weighing 2 kg, moderate growth vigor, and extremely strong fruit-setting ability, with 3-5 fruits per plant. It is suitable for early-maturing cultivation in greenhouses for market in April-May. The flesh is bright deep yellow, crisp and mealy, with a sugar content of 13%. The rind is deep green with dark black thick stripes, the rind is 3 mm thick, and it is tolerant of storage and transport. It takes about 30 days from female flower opening to fruit maturity, and about 85 days for the whole growth period.

2. Hong Xiaoyu: Extremely early-maturing, with vigorous growth, good fruit-setting, disease resistance and moisture tolerance, and continuous fruiting. A single fruit weighs about 2 kg, with 3-5 fruits per plant. The fruit is round, the rind base color is dark green with relatively strong stripes, the rind is thin, only 3 mm, and the flesh is peach-red with a sugar content of 13%. The flesh is fine, without residue, and has few seeds. It takes about 35 days from female flower opening to fruit maturity, and about 80 days for the whole growth period.

3. Black Beauty: Extremely early-maturing, with strong growth. The fruit is long oval, the rind is black-green, and the appearance is beautiful. A single fruit weighs 2-3 kg, the flesh is bright red, and the texture is tender, crisp and refreshing, with a sugar content of 13%. It has strong fruiting ability, resistance to disease and moisture, and tolerance to high temperature. The rind is thin yet tough, and tolerant of storage and transport. It takes 30 days from flower opening to fruit maturity, and it is most suitable for protected cultivation in spring and cultivation after autumn.

4. Jinfu: A new type variety with yellow rind and red flesh. It has small to medium leaves, nearly round leaves, yellow at the veins, and spreading petioles. The vines are slender, the female flowers set and bear fruit well, and growth is stable. It is resistant to anthracnose and fusarium wilt. The fruit is perfectly spherical, the rind is bright yellow covered with fine dense yellow stripes, and the flesh is peach-red with a sugar content above 12 degrees, good flavor, thin rind of 3 mm, few cracked fruits, and good marketability. A single fruit weighs 2 kg.

5. Jingxin No. 4: While retaining the advantages of "Jingxin No. 1" such as beautiful appearance, good taste and high sugar content, its cracking resistance and yield have both substantially improved, and its heat tolerance and storage and transport tolerance are strong. It is suitable for early-maturing cultivation in small arched sheds and open fields in early spring, as well as autumn greenhouse cultivation and long-distance transport.

6. Jingxin No. 7: Medium-early maturing, with round fruit. The rind is green covered with black stripes and has a fruit bloom. The flesh is bright red and crisp, with a soluble solids content at the center above 11.5%, and a single fruit weighs about 7-9 kg.

7. Guofeng: A high-yielding, crack-resistant first-generation hybrid. The fruit shape is regular, with narrow and neat stripes. The flesh is bright red, crisp and sweet, with high sweetness. 9. Jinglan: Its appearance and quality are very similar to "Xiaolan" from Taiwan Nongyou, but its disease resistance, fruit setting and yield are all stronger than "Xiaolan". It is currently one of the very few early-maturing yellow-fleshed small watermelon varieties in China that can rival "Xiaolan", and has become the main small watermelon variety planted in Jiangsu, Shandong, Hubei, Dalian and other regions.
