When do walnuts ripen?

The ripening period of walnut fruit varies with variety and climatic conditions. The ripening periods of early-maturing varieties and late-maturing varieties can differ by 10 to 25 days. Generally, the ripening period in northern regions is mostly from early to mid September, while southern regions are relatively earlier. Walnuts ripen around the “White Dew” solar term, and it is best to delay harvesting by a few days; harvesting in stages and batches is best. Usually the ripening period of scattered walnut trees is not very consistent, while that of walnut trees planted in blocks is more consistent. In river valleys, river flats, hills and middle-to-low mountain areas, harvesting in early September is best, while in high mountain areas early to mid September is better.
