The correct way to switch lucky bamboo from water culture to soil culture

Many people like to grow this plant in water, because it is cleaner, easier to manage, and looks especially nice in a bottle. But grown this way, it grows rather slowly, and without warmth it struggles to make it through the cold winter. So quite a few plant lovers want to switch it from water culture to soil culture. So what should you do to achieve the highest success rate?

1. Start with water culture

If it is a newly bought plant, whether you plan to grow it in water or plant it in soil, you should first grow it in water for a period. Remove the leaves at the bottom and clean it up thoroughly, otherwise they will rot in the water. All the leaves below the mouth of the bottle must be removed, so that it can grow quickly.

Insert it into the bottle, fill it with water, and place it at home. Do not move it for seven days, so that it has a stable growing environment. Pay attention to temperature, humidity, light and other factors. Do not change the water before its roots emerge; just top up the water after it evaporates. As long as the other factors are suitable, it will grow roots in about thirty days, and once they are three to four cm long, you can switch it to soil culture.

2. Trim the roots

Do not assume that you can just plant it straight into soil and it will survive; that is not actually the case. Once its roots have grown, take it out of the water, remove the rotted parts, wash off the green algae and duckweed and the like, put it in carbendazim to sterilise it, then take it out and let it dry in the sun.

3. Choose the soil

It needs soil with strong aeration and drainage, such as sandy soil. You can mix ordinary soil with fine sand and rotten leaves; soil made this way is what it likes best and will let it grow better.

4. Move it into a pot

Move it straight into a pot; the pot had best not be too large, and not too deep either, otherwise the water cannot drain out. The soil only needs to fill half the depth of the pot. After planting it in, water it thoroughly, then fill in the soil, then water again. After that, put the pot in a windy, well-ventilated area for about seven to fifteen days, then let it get sunlight. Generally, once planted in soil, its ability to resist the cold is stronger. Although winter is very cold, the soil can keep it warm and prevent it from freezing to death, and the next year it will grow lush and green again.
