A Detailed Guide to the Latest Grafting Time and Methods for Waxberry
Grafting is a common planting technique in our lives, and many fruit trees use it to improve their survival rate and achieve high and quality yields. Waxberry is a specialty fruit of southern China, and in the past its survival rate during planting was relatively low; later, after grafting methods were used, the survival rate of young trees was greatly improved. So how should waxberry be grafted? What is the specific operation method? Below, Qinnong Network brings you the grafting time and methods for waxberry. Let us learn about it together.
1. Grafting time
The suitable grafting time is when the temperature is mild, neither too low nor too high. It is generally carried out in February to March, and at the latest it must not exceed Qingming Festival; otherwise, the air humidity will be relatively high, causing excessive bleeding and grafting failure. Moreover, at this time the waxberry has already begun to sprout, and the bark and woody tissue have also taken shape and become hard and brittle. In areas of southern China with higher temperatures, it may be appropriately advanced to January to February.
2. Grafting methods
Select plants that are growing vigorously and free of disease, cut off the current year's shoots to serve as scions, remove the leaves, and place them in a cool, moist place for later use. Cut away the bark at the wounded section of the scion, then cut the bottom end into a wedge shape. At a position 8-10 cm from the ground on the rootstock, choose a smooth and straight part, cut off the rootstock, smooth the wound, and then make a vertical cut in the middle of the wound, with a depth equal to the wedge-shaped part of the scion. Then insert the scion into the rootstock incision. Be careful not to insert it all the way; leave a length of 0.5-1 cm so that the incision is closely connected. Then bind the incision tightly with plastic film to secure and retain moisture.
3. Post-grafting management
Within one month after grafting, when the rootstock sprouts, the buds should be removed promptly, as this helps the scion survive. After grafting, if there is excessive bleeding or if it is cloudy and rainy, the wrapping film should be pierced to release water. After successful grafting, when new buds sprout, the film should be removed promptly and the tips pinched, leaving 2-3 stronger shoots. When they grow to a certain length, pinch the tips repeatedly, which can accelerate the formation of the crown. In summer and winter, whitewash the trunks of young trees; this can prevent sunscald and freeze damage.
