A Detailed Guide to the Latest Techniques for Protecting Bananas from Cold and Overwintering

General News By Sophie Bennett 0 views
Banana is a fruit that grows in the tropics, a plant that loves warmth and moisture, but it fears low temperatures and frost, so a low-temperature environment is extremely unfavorable for its growth. However, nowadays many growers prefer to plant bananas mainly by avoiding cold damage at the seedling stage, so banana bunch emergence has to go through the cold winter. So how can bananas be protected from the cold in winter? How can they overwinter safely? Let's take a look together with Qinnong Net.

1. Choose cold-tolerant varieties

When planting bananas, climate and soil conditions must be considered. Choose areas that are flat and open with sufficient sunlight, and also require plots with deep, loose soil, good drainage, and few frost occurrences for planting. In addition, when planting, it is best to choose varieties with strong cold tolerance, high and stable yields, shorter pseudostems, and strong wind resistance.

2. Strengthen fertilizer and water management

In winter, apply overwintering fertilizer well to raise soil temperature and enhance the cold resistance of the plants, but the overwintering fertilizer should preferably not be nitrogen fertilizer. Nitrogen fertilizer will make the plants grow rapidly, consume nutrients, and the newly grown leaves will be too tender and green, with relatively low cold resistance. More warm-natured fertilizers should be applied, such as organic fertilizer and farmyard manure like manure water. These fertilizers release a large amount of heat when decomposing, which can raise soil temperature. Foliar fertilizer can also be sprayed at the appropriate time to improve the cold resistance of the leaves. In terms of watering management, if the weather is dry and cold, water in time to keep the soil moist, which can increase soil temperature; if the weather is wet and cold, drain in time to protect the root system.

3. Bagging for insulation

The bagging insulation method is a common cold protection method. For bananas that cannot be harvested in time in November, tie up the banana leaves and wrap them tightly with plastic film to prevent moisture from entering the banana stem. For banana fruits that have already emerged, use plastic bags to cover the fruit, with a warm-natured bag inside and a waterproof plastic film outside. Before bagging, spray a 500-fold solution of Fruit and Vegetable Preservation Transparent Coat, which can both prevent disease intrusion and improve fruit quality. When bagging, lay a layer of straw paper to avoid direct contact between the plastic film and the banana fruit. This can also raise the temperature and promote normal growth of the bananas.

4. Clear the orchard and burn smoke

Before overwintering, clear all weeds and debris from the orchard, then pile together straw or dry banana leaves, firewood, and the like. Light them during cold and low-temperature periods, preferably in the evening. When lighting, be careful that the open flame is not too large, so that it slowly produces smoke, creating a layer of smoke above the entire orchard. This can raise the orchard temperature and prevent frost damage.
