We are all familiar with durian; it is a fruit widely grown in Southeast Asia and has the reputation of being the king of fruits. It is extremely nutritious and sells very well on the market. Of course, because of its distinctive smell, many people dislike it too, but even more people like it. With the expansion of market demand, China also began planting durian in the last century, so how exactly should durian be planted? Let us take a look at durian planting techniques.

1. Sowing

The best time to sow durian is in spring. The durian seeds are inside the flesh; take them out and soak them in clean water. Under suitable temperatures, you can generally see the seed coat split within one day. Continue soaking until the white inner kernel is about to emerge, and then you can sow them. When sowing, it is best to keep the plant and row spacing at 20×20cm. After sowing, cover with a thin layer of soil and keep the soil moisture at about 30%, and seedlings will sprout and emerge before long.

2. Raising Seedlings

During seedling growth, pay attention to weeding and shallow cultivation. Remove the weeds in the orchard so they do not affect seedling growth or compete for nutrients. Shallow cultivation helps the seeds emerge quickly after germination, and at the same time, shallow cultivation and weeding can be combined with watering and fertilizing to promote rapid growth. In addition to sowing to raise seedlings, superior mother plants can be propagated by air layering, which roots very easily to form new seedlings; from propagation to a finished seedling takes only 2-3 months.

3. Transplanting and Field Planting

Whichever propagation method is used, when the seedlings grow to 40-50cm they can be planted out. Before planting, first prepare the planting plot by plowing the soil, then apply organic fertilizer, farmyard manure and lime as base fertilizer. The amount of base fertilizer applied depends on the growing environment and scale. Planting can be done throughout the year, and it should be planted with soil attached. When lifting the seedlings, water thoroughly once, then dig out the soil around the root system together, being careful not to damage the roots, so as not to cause planting failure. When planting, it is best to keep the plant and row spacing at 3×5 m.

4. Field Management

After applying sufficient base fertilizer, durian needs to be fertilized 2-3 times every year. These times are during the flower bud stage, the fruit swelling stage, and before harvest, and the type of fertilizer used in these three stages is also different. Durian fertilization mainly uses water-soluble fertilizer. After dilution, apply it through drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, or root drenching. This is convenient and quick, does not harm the soil or roots, and improves fertilizer use efficiency. In addition, durian has extremely strong sprouting ability. Under good fertilizer and water conditions, it is very prone to excessive vegetative growth, so timely shaping and pruning are needed to keep a good tree shape, increase air and light penetration, and improve yield and quality.

5. Harvesting

The ripening seasons of durian are November, February, and June-August. These are all its ripening periods. When the fruit is about to ripen, observe it carefully. When the fruit turns orange-yellow or orange-red, it is ripe, and then it can be harvested. After harvesting, it is not suitable to eat immediately; it needs about one week until the flesh becomes soft before it can be eaten.
