Navel orange is a fruit we are relatively familiar with; it tastes good, is rich in nutrients, and also has high dietary therapeutic value. Navel orange cultivation is also relatively common, with good planting benefits. However, the harm of pests and diseases during cultivation often affects its yield and quality, so what common pests and diseases does navel orange have? Let's take a look at its pest and disease control methods.

1. Huanglongbing (Citrus Greening Disease)

Huanglongbing is one of the more serious diseases harming citrus fruits during production, hindering the development of the navel orange cultivation industry. The pathogen is a Gram-negative bacterium. In the early stage of the disease, one or more branches of the canopy show yellowing leaves, and its disease symptoms have three different manifestations. After the plant is infected, its vigor weakens, yield decreases, fruit quality is poor, until the plant dies. This disease is mainly spread through diseased seedlings, scions, and insects.

Control methods: Focus on prevention. Clear weeds and diseased and disabled branches from the orchard, burn or deeply bury them in a centralized manner. Select disease-free seedlings for planting. When diseased plants are found, promptly pull them out and burn them, and disinfect the diseased holes. Alternatively, inject 1000ppm tetracycline hydrochloride or penicillin into diseased plants, which has a certain therapeutic effect.

2. Citrus Canker

Citrus canker is a common disease in navel orange production. It mainly harms the leaves and fruits of navel orange, and after onset it often causes leaf drop and fruit drop, sharply reducing yield. After fruits are infected, their appearance is extremely rough and their marketability is very poor; some cannot even be sold. During fruit storage, it also easily leads to rotting, affecting the economic returns of fruit growers. When leaves are infected during the seedling stage, it causes severe leaf drop and dead shoots, leading to weakened tree vigor and, in severe cases, plant death.

Control methods: Strengthen orchard management and reduce pathogenic bacteria. During planting, apply more organic fertilizer and phosphorus-potassium fertilizer to improve the plant's disease resistance. After harvest, promptly prune diseased branches and leaves, then gather fallen leaves and diseased fruits on the ground and burn them together. For old branches with disease spots, scrape off the disease spots and apply lime sulfur mixture; spraying the trunk with lime sulfur mixture solution also gives a relatively good therapeutic effect.

3. Anthracnose

Anthracnose is an infectious disease with a relatively long incubation period. It harms branches, leaves, and fruits, and sometimes also harms branches and flowers. In severe cases, it causes leaf drop and dead shoots, bark cracking, and fruit rotting, leading to total crop failure. When leaves are affected, irregular gray-white disease spots appear, ultimately causing the leaves to wither and fall off; when fruits are affected, yellow-brown disease spots appear on the surface, the spots gradually expand, and finally the affected area rots.

Control methods: In winter, carry out orchard cleaning, collect all fallen leaves, fallen branches, and fallen fruits on the ground and deeply bury or burn them to reduce pathogens, and spray disinfection and sterilization agents well in winter and early spring. Strengthen fertilizer and water management in the orchard, enhance tree vigor, and improve disease resistance. Fertilization should mainly use organic fertilizer, apply no or little chemical fertilizer, and never apply excessive nitrogen fertilizer. Prune rationally to increase air circulation between plants and reduce the occurrence of pests and diseases.

4. Pests

The main pests of navel orange include red spiders, scale insects, and noctuid moths. They all cause damage to the leaves, flowers, and fruits of navel orange, like to suck the sap from the plant's young and tender parts, causing damage to the growing nodes of the planting, slow or stagnant growth, and in severe cases causing leaf drop and fruit drop, and may even cause the plant to die, with extremely great harm.

Control methods: Pest control methods should combine agricultural and chemical control. Do a good job in orchard cleaning to reduce pest sources, and spray pesticides in a timely manner.
