Calcium fruit, formerly known as European plum, is a new type of fruit discovered and bred in China from wild European plum. It is called calcium fruit because of its strong calcium-supplementing ability. Besides being cultivated for food and processing, its trees can also be used to make ornamental fruit bonsai. It has extremely strong drought resistance and can bloom and bear fruit even in areas with annual rainfall of 300mm. So how should it be planted? Let's find out together.

1. Planting time

Bare-root seedlings can be planted in spring and autumn. For spring planting, it is best to do so before the spring buds swell. Temperatures in northern regions are generally lower than in the south, so it is usually done in early March. If it is bagged seedlings or green-body seedlings raised in nutrient pots, they can be planted in spring, summer and autumn except winter, but the earlier the planting time, the better. When planting in autumn, the time should be at least one month before the ground freezes, so that the seedlings can safely overwinter.

2. Land preparation and field planting

Calcium fruit has extremely strong adaptability to the environment. When planting, you can choose flat land or sloping land to establish an orchard. It can be planted at the edge of fields, on field ridges, or in woodland with good ventilation and light transmission. Before planting, prepare the land according to the planting terrain. For example, flat land can be made into beds, and sloping land can be deep-plowed and built into ridges along the contour lines. When planting on flat land, base fertilizer should be applied together with mulching, while on sloping land, preparations should be made for surface runoff and water storage. After that, plant the seedlings at a density of 50×50cm, and use the land reasonably according to actual conditions to increase returns.

3. Field management

After planting, water once a day to improve the survival rate of the saplings. During the growth period of young trees, carry out 3-4 rounds of reasonable intertillage and weeding according to field conditions, leaving no weeds at all, so as not to affect plant growth. Intertillage can loosen the soil and promote root growth of young trees. In October each year, apply 1 kg of decomposed farmyard manure per plant to help it overwinter. Before spring shoots in April of the following year, apply an appropriate amount of nitrogen fertilizer to promote spring shoot growth and flowering and fruiting. You can dissolve 20 kg of urea per mu in water and apply it by watering. During the fruit period in July, topdress once more to improve yield and quality. At this time, it is suitable to apply compound fertilizer mainly based on phosphorus and potassium fertilizer.

4. Shaping and pruning

After planting, the saplings should continue to be pruned appropriately to dwarf the plant and cultivate strong branches. Branches with a diameter of less than 1mm should be completely cut off. The length of branches should not exceed 30cm; those exceeding this should be cut to between 25-30cm. The main trunk is generally maintained at about 30-40cm, and the poorly developed part of 5-10cm at the top should also be cut off. In addition, to obtain higher yield and larger single fruit weight, flower and fruit thinning is also necessary. Generally, only 200-250 fruits are kept per plant, evenly distributed on 3-4 basal branches and more than a dozen side branches. Fruit thinning is carried out in the early fruit period.
