How to grow the latest flat peaches? A full breakdown of the key planting techniques
When we talk about flat peaches, surely we all think of a scene from Journey to the West, namely Sun Wukong causing havoc at the flat peach banquet, where eating flat peaches grants immortality and a great boost in magical power. In reality, these are just myths. In real life, the flat peach is simply a variety of the peach tree plant. Flat peaches are relatively high in iron, and eating them can be used to treat anemia. So how do you grow flat peaches? Follow along with the editor below and experience the world of flat peach growing.
1. Orchard planning
Before planting flat peaches, we need to understand the growth habits of flat peaches so we can choose a site for the orchard. Peach trees in general are drought-tolerant but not waterlogging-tolerant, so the orchard should generally be built on sandy loam with a low groundwater table, convenient drainage, irrigation and transport, good soil permeability, and moderate soil pH. Next, the orchard planning should be carried out according to the selected terrain, area and other factors, arranging walkways, water channels and so on. Finally, clear the land, dig the planting holes, spread in base fertilizer, and cover it with a layer of fine soil about two to three cm thick, to prevent the fertilizer from dissipating and also to keep the peach tree roots from being irritated and damaged.

There are many varieties of flat peach, so choosing the variety and selecting the saplings are fairly basic matters. At present, some of the better flat peach varieties are Golden Oil Flat Peach, Flat Peach No. 4, Giant Flat Peach, Early Dew Flat Peach, Early Sweet Honey, Mid-Autumn Flat Peach and Ruipan No. 1, among others. When selecting saplings, choose high-quality saplings with well-developed roots, vigorous growth, strong vitality, and no damage from pests or diseases for planting.
3. Cultivation and field planting
Before planting, we need to prune off part of the branches and leaves of the flat peach saplings, which can increase the survival rate of the flat peach trees. The row spacing of each planting hole is generally about 60 to 80 cm, and the plant spacing is about 40 to 60 cm. Place the sapling into the planting hole, backfill with soil, water it appropriately, and firm the ground. If necessary, a layer of plastic film can be laid over it, which can achieve a moisture-retaining effect and thus promote rapid growth of the flat peach saplings.
4. Orchard management
The most important points of orchard management are water and fertilizer management, intertillage and weeding, and orchard cleanup. For fertilizing, we need to apply additional fertilizer according to the fertility level of the planting site and the fertilizer needs of the flat peaches. During the first three years of planting, organic fertilizer is mainly used, and fertilizer needs to be applied at least four to five times a year. After the flat peach trees bear fruit, in order to reduce tree vigor, the use of potassium fertilizer and phosphorus fertilizer needs to be increased, and fertilizing should be carried out according to the growth stage of the flat peaches. At the same time, watering and drainage should be carried out scientifically according to the water needs of the flat peaches at different growth stages. To prevent the soil from becoming compacted, which leads to poorer soil permeability and affects plant growth, intertillage and weeding need to be carried out according to actual conditions each year, generally no fewer than three times. Finally, there is orchard cleanup, which is generally done after the fruit is harvested each year, cleaning the orchard thoroughly and carrying out comprehensive disinfection.
The area planted with flat peaches in our country is still fairly extensive at present, because the climates of all regions of our country are still quite suitable for growing flat peaches.
