Mango is one of the popular fruits in summer and is relatively favored by consumers in the market. When growing and producing mangoes, its propagation methods can be divided into sexual propagation and asexual propagation. Among them, sexual propagation is seed propagation, so how exactly should it be done? Follow the editor to take a look.

1. Site selection and land preparation

The nursery site should be close to a water source and in a wind-sheltered environment. It is advisable to choose sandy loam with deep soil, rich organic matter, and good drainage as the nursery site. Heavy clay soil that easily hardens and shallow soil are not suitable for a nursery site. The nursery site should be thoroughly cleared, leveled and raked, made into high beds according to the terrain, and drainage ditches should be opened. The beds are 10 m long, 80-100 cm wide, and 20 cm high, with 40-50 cm between beds. Mango has a relatively deep root system, so sufficient base fertilizer should be applied before planting to ensure robust seedling growth. Each mu should be applied with 30004000 kg of decomposed livestock manure or compost, which can be broadcast, applied in furrows, or applied in holes.

2. Seed treatment

For seeds, choose varieties with strong adaptability to the local environment. Select high-yielding, robust mother trees for seed collection, and choose fruits of medium size, plump, and with a regular shape for seed use. After removing the flesh from the seeds, wash the flesh off the stone shell, remove floating seeds, and place the seeds in the sun to dry until they are dry, but do not expose them to strong light for a long time, so as to avoid affecting germination.

3. Shell removal and germination promotion

After the seeds are treated, germination should begin. Because the outer shell of mango seeds is relatively hard and will hinder seed germination, the seeds should be opened. When removing the shell, be careful not to damage the seed kernel inside. Place the seed kernels on a sand bed, arranged one by one, with the hilum facing downward, and spacing of 3-5 cm between seeds. After sowing, cover with 1-2 cm of fine sand and water thoroughly once. After that, water once a day to keep the sand moist. Seedlings emerge in about 12-15 days, and full emergence occurs in about 20 days.

4. Seedling stage management

When seedlings have fully emerged, transplant them promptly and control the plant and row spacing. For transplanting, use a bamboo stick to dig out the entire roots of the seedlings together with the seed kernel, then transplant them into the seedbed. When lifting seedlings, be careful not to damage the root system. If the main root is too long, it may be appropriately trimmed, but it should not be shorter than 10 cm. When transplanting, spread the seedling roots out, plant at a depth level with the root crown, backfill with fine soil, and make the roots and soil closely connected. Water promptly after transplanting to increase the survival rate. The mango seedling stage occurs during high temperatures and is sometimes accompanied by drought, so in order to avoid seedling death caused by water loss, water according to the wet and dry condition of the soil, replenish water, and keep the soil moist. To ensure the nutrients needed for seedling growth, after the seedlings sprout new shoots, topdress promptly. Diluted manure water may be applied, and the concentration should be increased as the seedlings grow.
