Melon, also known as fragrant melon, sweet melon and white orchid melon, is an annual trailing herbaceous plant of the cucumber genus in the Cucurbitaceae family. Its cultivation history is long, and it is widely grown in our country. So when should melons be sown? And how should they be planted? Come and take a look with the editor.

1. Growth habits

Melons are suited to growing in loam or sandy loam with deep soil layers, rich in organic acids, good fertility and good permeability. They are drought-tolerant but not waterlogging-tolerant. However, the root system is distributed relatively shallowly, so they need relatively high soil moisture and relatively low air humidity; the relative air humidity is best controlled at around 50 degrees, the optimum growth temperature is between 18-25 degrees, and the optimum temperature for flowering and fruiting is 22-25 degrees.

2. Seed selection and sowing

Superior varieties should be selected according to the local soil, climate and needs. Before sowing, the seeds should first be disinfected and then sown. The disinfection method is: soak the seeds in a low-concentration carbendazim solution for 10 minutes. Sowing can be divided into spring sowing and autumn sowing. Spring sowing is in February-March of spring, and autumn sowing is in August-November. When sowing, seedling cultivation in nutrient pots or nutrient bags as well as direct sowing can be used; in folk practice, direct sowing is generally chosen. Before sowing, sufficient base fertilizer should be applied: 3000-5000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure and 50 kg of compound fertilizer per mu, applied in furrows and then deeply applied in pits, then covered with soil and sown, with 2-3 seeds sown per pit.

3. Seedling stage management

Fragrant melon seedlings grow extremely fast after emergence, especially seedlings raised in nutrient pots or nutrient bags. In order to avoid excessive seedling growth, water and temperature must be strictly controlled. After emergence, the daytime temperature should be controlled at 20-25 degrees, and at night controlled at around 10 degrees. At the same time, strengthen fertilizer and water management, and apply a dilute compound fertilizer solution once a week, which can promote seedling growth. In addition, during the seedling stage, timely intertillage and weeding should be carried out to promote root development. Many diseases come from the root system; if the root system is not well developed, diseases are more severe.

4. Pest and disease control

Melons have relatively many pests and diseases. The main diseases at the seedling stage are root rot, powdery mildew and rust. Metalaxyl or metalaxyl-copper can be sprayed to control root rot, and Bordeaux mixture can be sprayed to control powdery mildew and rust. As for insect pests, aphids occur most frequently, followed by cutworms, armyworms, cotton bollworms and other pests, which can be controlled with low-toxicity and high-efficiency pesticides. For example, aphids can be controlled with imidacloprid, while others can be controlled by spraying with Tianwangxing emulsifiable concentrate or Mieshaoli emulsifiable concentrate.
