How to Grow Wampee? The Latest Cultivation and Management Techniques Tutorial
Wampee is a fruit unique to the Lingnan region, rich in nutrients; it not only has high edible value but can also be used as medicine, having the effects of promoting digestion and resolving phlegm, and can treat conditions such as indigestion with food stagnation and cough with phlegm. The cultivation and management of wampee are related to its yield and quality, so how should it be managed during production? Let's take a look together.
1. Management of Young Trees
Young trees have an underdeveloped root system, shallower distribution, and weaker absorption, so the fertilization principle for young trees is frequent light applications, with nitrogen fertilizer as the main type, combined with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers and trace elements. Start fertilizing one month after planting to promote seedling growth, and when watering, also pay attention to changes in soil moisture. Young trees grow vigorously and require more water, but too much water can also damage the root system, so water promptly during drought and drain promptly after rain. After young trees are topped, promptly pinch the tips to encourage more branching, accelerate the formation of the canopy, and lay the foundation for future high yields.
2. Management of Fruiting Trees
When clearing the orchard in winter, prune the fruit trees, removing dead branches, diseased and pest-infested branches, shaded branches, and weak branches. This increases the airiness and light penetration of the tree canopy, reduces unnecessary nutrient consumption, eliminates sources of pests and diseases, reduces the harm of pests and diseases the following year, and promotes bud differentiation. At the same time, do a good job with fertilization: fertilize both before and after fruiting, and also apply timely topdressing when autumn shoots develop. This can prompt the fruiting mother branches to sprout promptly and grow thick and strong, enabling them to bear more fruit.
3. Flower and Fruit Thinning
Wampee flower clusters are relatively large, with a high number of flowers and a long flowering period, but the fruit-setting rate is low. Because the flowering period is long, fruit drop is very likely to occur, and it also affects the growth and ripening of the fruit. So in order to reduce the consumption of nutrients by the plant and make the flower clusters mature more uniformly, appropriate flower thinning can be carried out. From flowering until just before full bloom, cut off half or one third of the top flower cluster. The same applies to fruit thinning: after thinning, the weight of individual fruits can be increased, making the fruit grow uniformly and ripen consistently. Fruit thinning should be done promptly after physiological fruit drop, generally removing deformed fruits, diseased and pest-damaged fruits, and small fruits.
4. Pest and Disease Control
The main diseases of wampee are anthracnose and sooty mold, and the main pests are white moths and lanternflies. Anthracnose can occur at all growth stages of wampee. The control methods are: strengthen fertilizer and water management to improve tree vigor and the plant's disease resistance; do a good job of orchard cleaning in winter, promptly prune diseased branches and leaves, rotten fruits, etc., to reduce sources of disease; and spray promptly when disease occurs, such as thiophanate-methyl, Tuzet, chlorothalonil, carbendazim, etc. To control sooty mold, first do a good job controlling aphids and scale insects, reduce insect sources, and cut off the transmission route. When disease occurs, spray sulfur suspension concentrate or copper oxychloride suspension for control. For pests, spray pesticides such as dichlorvos, dimethoate, and methomyl for control, mainly alternating the agents to avoid developing resistance.
