Walnut, also called Persian walnut, is one of the world's four famous nuts, rich in nutrients and highly beneficial to the human body. According to expert research, the optimal number of walnuts to eat per day is six. China can be considered a major walnut-growing country, with a wide planting range covering North China, Northwest China, Southwest China, Central China, South China and East China. In particular, Bozhou in Anhui, China is the largest walnut forest farm in Asia. When growing walnuts, fertilization is very crucial. Do you know how to fertilize walnut trees? Follow along with the editor below to learn.

I. Base fertilizer

Walnut trees have different fertilizer requirements and fertilizer types at different growth stages, and the application of base fertilizer is the basic condition for walnut tree growth. The base fertilizer is mainly organic fertilizer or decomposed farmyard manure. In addition to the fertilizer applied at the time of planting, which is called base fertilizer, during the later growth process of walnut trees, base fertilizer also needs to be applied again every autumn or spring. This can promote flower bud differentiation and root growth, thereby increasing the yield of walnut trees. When fertilizing, we generally apply fertilizer in combination with deep plowing, and watering is needed after fertilization, which helps nutrient absorption.

II. Topdressing

Topdressing walnut trees means, on the basis of the base fertilizer, reasonably supplying nutrients according to the different growth stages of the walnut tree, which helps improve walnut yield and quality and ensures the growth of the walnut tree. Generally, at least three topdressings are needed during the growth process of walnuts. Let's learn about them in detail below.

1. Growth fertilizer

The growth fertilizer for walnuts is generally applied reasonably after the base fertilizer according to the growth condition of the walnut, to promote the growth of new branches and promote flowering, achieving the effect of shortening the growth period. In this topdressing, we mainly use quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer, combined with a small amount of phosphorus fertilizer. At the same time, the amount of this topdressing can be said to account for about half of the total topdressing amount, because if the topdressing amount is insufficient, it is very likely to affect the growth and development of the walnut tree, thereby affecting flowering and fruiting.

2. Flower and fruit fertilizer

Flower and fruit fertilizer is generally applied before and after flowering, mainly to promote flowering and achieve the effect of promoting flowers and preserving fruits. In this fertilization, we still mainly use nitrogen fertilizer, but it needs to be combined with phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. Topdressing during this period can reduce flower and fruit drop caused by insufficient nutrients, and at the same time helps branch growth and promotes proper nutrient transport.

3. Fruit-strengthening fertilizer

Fruit-strengthening fertilizer is generally a topdressing applied during the fruiting period, around the end of June, and it is also the last topdressing in the process from flowering to fruiting in walnut cultivation. This topdressing mainly uses phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, combined with a small amount of nitrogen fertilizer, to maintain nutritional balance. This topdressing is mainly to improve the quality of walnuts and can also lay the foundation for high yield in the coming year.

Generally speaking, the fertilization process for walnut trees is like this. At the same time, when fertilizing, we can use methods such as whole-orchard broadcasting, radial fertilization, ring fertilization, hole fertilization, strip fertilization, and disc-shaped fertilization. These are all very commonly used fertilization methods, and you can refer to them as well.
