Papaya is a new type of fruit introduced to China from South America, but it has already become a popular fruit on the Chinese market. Its taste is actually not very good, and eating it raw still has a certain astringent flavor, but because of its high nutritional value, its sales on the market are still quite good. Papaya is widely distributed in China, and it is grown in places such as Shandong, Shaanxi, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Guangdong. So today what we are going to learn about is the field management techniques for papaya. Let's take a look together.

1. Watering

After papaya is planted, it needs to be watered once, and its later water requirement is actually not very large, although papaya is a moisture-loving plant. In our usual planting process, especially during the plum rain season or in rainy seasons, we must drain water in time to avoid waterlogging in the field, which would affect the normal growth of papaya, but during droughts, we also need to water in time. Papaya's water requirement is relatively large during the flowering and fruiting periods, so we should pay attention to watering during these two periods and just ensure a sufficient water supply.

2. Fertilizing

Papaya has a relatively large fertilizer requirement. Before planting papaya, we should apply a heavy base fertilizer. After the papaya survives, we should carry out appropriate topdressing to promote the growth of young trees. If topdressing is too late, it will affect the vigor of the papaya tree, leading to poor growth and development, and thus affecting the yield of papaya. Secondly, after papaya flowers and bears fruit, we need to carry out topdressing in four steps, namely growth fertilizer, flower-promoting fertilizer, fruit-strengthening fertilizer and base fertilizer. When fertilizing, we also need to pay attention to avoiding nutrients damaging the papaya roots, and generally we use the method of ring-shaped trench application for fertilizer application outside the roots.

3. Earthing up

During the growth process of papaya, we need to carry out intertillage and earthing up twice a year, which can enhance the permeability of the soil and at the same time facilitate the absorption of nutrients and the supply of water, improving the utilization rate of nutrients. In addition, when carrying out intertillage and earthing up, we should clear the weeds in the field. Intertillage and earthing up are generally carried out after each watering, or after rain clears up, so as to prevent soil hardening from affecting the growth of papaya.

4. Pruning

Proper pruning of branches and leaves of the papaya tree is also very necessary, as this directly relates to the yield and quality of papaya. Generally, we prune the overly dense branches, weak branches and pest- and disease-damaged branches of papaya, and retain strong branches and healthy branches. The papaya tree can be pruned into various shapes such as a cup shape or a shape that is empty inside and round outside, which is conducive to the growth of branches of the papaya tree, thereby increasing the amount of flowering and fruiting.

5. Fruit thinning

Fruit thinning is something many people overlook during the planting process, and at the same time many growers are reluctant to thin fruit, thinking that removing fruit means economic loss. In fact, if the excess fruit is not thinned, the loss will be even greater. Therefore, after papaya sets fruit, we should thin out those with relatively weak growth, dense fruit and deformed fruit, and retain strong fruit, so as to ensure the supply of nutrients and improve the yield and quality of papaya.

The above is the editor's understanding of papaya field management techniques. Of course, during the planting process we also need to pay attention to the prevention and control of pests and diseases and some other issues, but if these above problems can be solved, then the papaya grown will basically be of very top quality.
