The Latest Grape Trellising Methods and Techniques Explained in Detail
In our lives, many fruit crops need supports and trellises to be built, and among fruits the most common one is grape trellis construction. Trellis construction actually looks very simple, but is it really that easy? Are there any requirements for building trellises when growing grapes? So today, the editor will take everyone to learn about grape trellis construction methods.
1. Trellis Preparation
When planting grapes, we need to take trellis construction into consideration. First, we must prepare the trellis materials used for building it. Some use wooden stakes, bamboo frames, tying ropes, and iron wire, some use cement structures, and some directly prepare steel trellises. Of course, the most durable among them is steel, while the lowest in cost is wooden stakes. If we consider it from the cost aspect, we generally choose wooden stakes to build the trellis. Of course, when preparing the trellis, it is also closely related to the terrain of the planting site, and trellis preparation should be carried out according to different situations.
2. Trellising Time
There is also a time for trellising grapes; it cannot be too early or too late. Generally, we wait until the grape seedlings have grown to about thirty to fifty cm before building the trellis. This period is exactly when the grape seedlings grow fastest, and building the trellis during this time is also convenient for management. It will not easily damage the newly grown grape seedlings, and we can also incidentally carry out pinching and topping to promote the growth of side branches.
3. Trellising Methods
Grape trellising is mainly divided into two types, namely the hedge trellis and the pergola trellis. The hedge trellis is further divided into the single hedge trellis and the double hedge trellis. The single hedge trellis is mainly built by setting up upright supports according to the row spacing of the grape planting, and then connecting each support with iron wire. This method is more suitable for close planting. The supports of the double hedge trellis are basically no different from those of the single hedge trellis, except that each grapevine has two supports. This can increase the trellis area and effectively use space, but it is not convenient for field operations. The pergola trellis is further divided into the large pergola trellis and the small pergola trellis. The large pergola trellis generally has a row spacing greater than or equal to six m, a rear-end height of one meter five, a front-end height of two meters five, and a trellis length of ten m or longer. For the small pergola trellis, a front-end height of two m and a rear-end height of one m are sufficient.
4. Points to Note
When building the trellis, the first thing we need to note is that the trellis must be built firmly, the stakes must be driven as deep into the ground as possible, and we must test whether it is stable. Then, when tying the iron wire, it must be tied well, and there should not be a phenomenon of it easily coming loose. After the trellis is built, we should first test it, and only after confirming that the trellis is firm and will not collapse should we guide the grape vines onto the trellis. Finally, when guiding the vines, we should handle them gently and do a good job of tying them.
Building the trellis when planting grapes is a very important step, and its impact on grape yield and quality is also very great. Thank you everyone for your long-term support and encouragement of our website. We will continue to work hard to provide everyone with a better reference platform.
