When planting Chinese bayberry (Myrica rubra), pruning is generally used to improve the plant's shape, encourage more branching, expand the canopy, increase the number of flowers and fruit, and raise both yield and quality. However, you should not prune blindly, or it will have the opposite effect. So when should you prune? And how should you prune?

When planting Chinese bayberry (Myrica rubra), pruning is generally used to improve the plant's shape, encourage more branching, expand the canopy, increase the number of flowers and fruit, and raise both yield and quality. However, you should not prune blindly, or it will have the opposite effect. So when should you prune? And how should you prune? Let's find out together.

1. Pruning time

The usual pruning time is in summer, from June to July, when large branches and strong branches that disrupt the tree shape are sawed off; spring pruning is from March to April, when small branches are pruned, mainly removing some dense branches, dead branches, and cutting back branches that bear too much fruit; and autumn pruning is in November, when mainly overly vigorous nutrient branches and autumn shoots are pruned.

2. Pruning methods

The pruning methods for Chinese bayberry trees mainly include bud removal, pinching, cutting back, thinning, renewal pruning, branch bending and propping, and girdling, which together cover all the pruning work for Chinese bayberry. Bud removal and pinching are mainly done on young trees to encourage the plant to branch more and form a canopy early, laying the foundation for a good harvest later. The rest are done on fruiting trees: cutting back can promote branch renewal and rejuvenation and restore tree vigor; thinning is to increase the air and light penetration of the canopy, which benefits flowering and fruiting; renewal pruning serves to promote the growth of the mother branch, rejuvenating declining trees and large side branches; branch bending and propping are to make the canopy spread outward, so as to prevent the inner branches from drying out and becoming bare; girdling is to promote flower bud differentiation and increase the fruit-setting rate.

3. Pruning young trees

Generally, the trunk is headed at 30-50, and after the spring shoots sprout, 3-5 strong shoots are selected and trained as main branches, with the rest as side branches. When the main branches have grown to a certain extent, select a strong one at 50 cm from the trunk as a secondary main branch, and the second secondary main branch should be on the other side of the first secondary main branch. At the same time, side branches should also be trained so that the canopy forms early, laying the foundation for early fruiting.

4. Pruning during the growing season

Pruning during the growing season is mainly divided into spring pruning and autumn pruning. Spring pruning is generally in April to May, and after pruning it can promote root sprouting and growth, making the spring shoot period lag behind the flowering and fruiting period. In this way, new shoot sprouting can be prevented from competing with flowering and fruiting for nutrients, thereby increasing the fruit-setting rate. Autumn pruning is generally in October to November, mainly to promote flower bud differentiation in the plant; late-emerging water sprouts should be pruned off in time, which can save nutrients and promote flower bud differentiation.
