Hami melon is a fruit unique to Xinjiang in our country, sweet in taste and high in nutritional value, with relatively high demand on the market and a relatively wide planting area. To grow Hami melons well, the first thing is to do a good job of fertilization, so how should Hami melons be fertilized? Let's take a look at the detailed introduction below.

1. Fertilizer requirements and characteristics

For Hami melon, among the three conventional fertilizers of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, potassium is needed the most, followed by nitrogen, and phosphorus the least. According to research, for every 100 kg of fresh Hami melons produced, 2.5-3.5 kg of nitrogen, 1.3-1.7 kg of phosphorus and 4.4-4.6 kg of potassium need to be absorbed from the soil in total. The period of highest fertilizer demand is the fruiting stage. During production, the principles of applying sufficient base fertilizer, heavily applying fertilizer at the melon swelling stage, and skillfully applying foliar fertilizer should be mastered, with organic fertilizer as the main type and chemical fertilizer as a supplement.

2. Apply sufficient base fertilizer

Base fertilizer is generally best applied as a combination of organic and inorganic fertilizers, to provide sufficient nutrients for Hami melon before flowering and speed up its growth. The root system of Hami melon is relatively shallow, so the base fertilizer is generally applied at 3000-4000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure per mu, together with 15 kg of potassium sulfate, 25 kg of compound fertilizer and 0.5-1 kg of borax. It should be applied into the bottom of the ridge when land is prepared, and after application a layer of shallow soil should be covered to avoid direct contact with the roots of the seedlings, which would cause seedling burn and root burn.

3. Apply heavy fertilizer at the flowering and fruiting stage

After Hami melon enters the flowering and fruiting stage, the nutrients it absorbs show a gradually increasing trend, so at this time topdressing should be done promptly 2-3 times; in the early stage, nitrogen fertilizer is the main type, matched with an appropriate amount of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, to promote early and rapid growth of the melon seedlings. After fruit set, when the fruit reaches the swelling stage, the demand for fertilizer peaks at this time, so fertilizer should be applied heavily, mainly potassium fertilizer, while controlling the application amount of nitrogen fertilizer to avoid excessive vegetative growth of branches and leaves. Generally, 10-15 kg of potassium sulfate compound fertilizer is applied per mu, and after an interval of 7-10 days it is applied once more, with 5-10 kg of potassium sulfate compound fertilizer per mu.

4. Skillfully apply foliar fertilizer

Hami melon also needs a variety of trace elements during growth, and its root system is relatively shallow, so after fertilization it cannot absorb and utilize them in time; at this point, the foliar spraying method should be used. Foliar spraying has the characteristics of a small amount of fertilizer used and quick results. Generally, when the plant lacks nutrients, a low-concentration fertilizer solution can be sprayed, which can very quickly supplement the corresponding nutrients.
