Rambutan can be propagated both sexually and asexually, but in production we usually adopt asexual propagation for planting. However, today the editor wants to share with you the seedling cultivation techniques for sexual propagation of rambutan, because asexual propagation of seedlings is the foundation of asexual propagation, since seedling plants are usually used as rootstock seedlings. So let us learn the content below together.

1. Seed selection and seed washing

To ensure the quality of rambutan seedlings, we also pay great attention to seed selection. First, we should choose excellent rambutan varieties according to the specific local conditions, for example, the high-yielding Baoyan No. 5 seeds. Second, choose seeds that are plump, not moldy, without spots, and free from pests and diseases. After selecting the seeds, put them into clean water to wash them, cleaning off residual sugar or other substances on the seeds. It is best to wash them two to three times to avoid the phenomenon of not being washed clean.

2. Seedbed preparation

After selecting the seeds, we need to prepare the seedbed construction. Generally, a sand bed is built in a shaded place. The river sand used for the sand bed should be coarse river sand; fine river sand is not very suitable for rambutan seedling cultivation because it will affect the sprouting of rambutan. Second, we should reasonably plan the size of the seedbed, mainly according to the quantity sown. The height of the seedbed should be controlled at about 18 to 20 cm, and the width should be about 1 m to 1.5 m, which is convenient for later seedling-stage management. Finally, the seedbed should be leveled and drainage measures should be taken to avoid seed rot.

3. Germination promotion treatment

Rambutan seeds need germination promotion treatment before sowing, which can increase the germination rate of the seeds. Place the selected seeds evenly on the sand bed with the eye facing downward. It is best to press them appropriately, which can increase the germination speed of the seeds. After the seeds are placed, cover them with a layer of fine river sand to achieve the effect of heat preservation and moisture retention. Finally, build a shade net on the seedbed to regulate light intensity, and water once, thoroughly soaking the seedbed. During the germination promotion period, we also need to spray trichlorfon solution once, which can prevent harm to the seeds from pests.

4. Seedling management

Germination promotion generally takes about half a month to 20 days. During this period, we should keep the seedbed moist, that is, spray water frequently, but the amount of watering should be moderate, because being too dry or too wet is not conducive to seed germination. In cool weather, spraying water once a day is generally enough, but if it is sunny, it needs to be sprayed once in the morning and once in the evening; and if there is rainy weather, drainage should be carried out in time. In addition, before the seeds germinate, weeds will also appear in the field, so we need to weed by hand. After the seeds emerge, watering should be stopped for a period to let them adapt to the environment. Watering should be carried out after five days, and appropriate topdressing should be applied at the same time to promote the growth of the seedlings.

That is basically all there is to rambutan seedling cultivation by seed propagation. In fact, its seed propagation is relatively simple, but if large-scale planting is to be carried out, it is still advisable to use other propagation methods.
