Watermelon can be said to be a national fruit in our country. The demand for watermelon in summer is very large. There are now many varieties of watermelon in our country, and the planting area is also constantly expanding. It is a fruit with relatively high economic value. When planting watermelon, fertilization work is very important and directly affects the yield of watermelon. So today the editor has brought you the fertilization management techniques for watermelon. Let's take a look below!

1. Farmyard manure

Farmyard manure should be applied as a base fertilizer before planting watermelon. Before planting, along with land preparation, apply about 3500kg of farmyard manure per mu. The farmyard manure must be fully decomposed to prevent excessive heat from burning the watermelon seedlings. Then, during the vine extension stage, fruit setting stage, and other stages of watermelon, an appropriate amount of farmyard manure should also be applied. This enhances the growth capacity of watermelon, strengthens stress resistance, and improves the quality and yield of watermelon. Note that chemical fertilizers should not be applied alone, and pay attention to the amount used to prevent reducing the sugar content of watermelon and causing a decline in quality.

2. Applying potassium fertilizer

Potassium fertilizer is very important for the growth of watermelon. Applying potassium fertilizer appropriately can promote watermelon metabolism, synthesize carbohydrates, and improve nutrient transport capacity. It can also enhance the disease resistance and quality of watermelon. When applying base fertilizer, add about 8kg of potassium fertilizer, and then during the fruit-setting stage, also pay attention to appropriately applying potassium fertilizer as a top dressing. This can significantly improve watermelon quality and increase yield.

3. Increasing boron fertilizer application

Watermelon also has a certain demand for trace elements during growth. The most important among them is boron fertilizer. Reasonable topdressing of boron fertilizer can effectively reduce the thickness of the watermelon rind and avoid hollow watermelon. It enables watermelon to form high-quality fruit with thin rind and sweet flesh. However, also pay attention to the application of chlorine fertilizer. Watermelon does not need chlorine fertilizer. If chlorine fertilizer is applied, it will reduce the sugar content of watermelon and cause a decline in quality.

4. Applying cake fertilizer

When the watermelon fruit grows to the size of a table tennis ball, dig topdressing holes at a position about 12cm from the main root of the watermelon plant. Then apply an appropriate amount of cake fertilizer to each plant, cover with soil, and water. An appropriate amount of cake fertilizer can promote fruit expansion and increase growth speed. However, be sure to control the amount used and do not apply excessively, otherwise it can easily cause excessive vegetative growth of watermelon, reduce the fruit-setting rate, and produce poor fruit with thick rind and sour flesh.

5. Foliar fertilizer

Foliar fertilizer is used to improve the growth capacity of watermelon leaves. Foliar fertilizer is mainly applied during the vine extension stage and expansion stage. Generally, spray about 50kg per mu, about once a week, for about one month, which can significantly increase sweetness. When spraying foliar fertilizer, be careful to be thorough and ensure that every leaf, front and back, is evenly covered by the solution. This enhances the photosynthetic capacity of leaves, increases nutrient accumulation, and promotes the growth of watermelon.

When fertilizing, be sure to pay attention to position and depth. Do not place it too close to the plant, to prevent burning the plant, and if too far, it will reduce fertilizer efficiency. The depth should be kept at about 10cm. If too shallow, the fertilizer volatilizes faster, which will not only harm the plant but also reduce fertilizer efficiency.
