Crisp red plum is an excellent variety among plums. Its flesh is crisp and sweet, and it is quite popular on the market, so many people like to grow this fruit. So how should crisp red plum be cultivated? Let's learn about it together with the editor.

1. Orchard Site Selection

Crisp red plum does not have particularly strict requirements for soil, but its root system is mostly distributed in the surface layer of the soil, and it is a fruit tree that is not tolerant of waterlogging. Therefore, when planting, sandy soil that does not easily accumulate water and has a deep soil layer should be selected, and a plot with high, dry terrain and a sunny aspect should be chosen, taking care that it is sheltered from the wind. Before planting, the soil must be deeply plowed and improved to ensure sufficient base fertilizer. When expanding the planting holes the following year, this will help its new roots grow, and appropriate intercropping can also be done.

2. Planting

The best planting time is about December to January of the following year. Before planting, first break up the topsoil, mix it with decomposed base fertilizer, and then backfill it. Then cover the soil with a thin layer of soil. Finally, hold the seedling upright and place it in the middle of the hole. When covering with soil, gently lift the seedling to encourage the root system to spread out and make full contact with the soil. After covering with soil, with the seedling as the center, pile it into a shape that is high on the inside and level with the ground on the outside. In this way, it helps the planting hole retain fertilizer and moisture, and prevents water from accumulating in the hole, which would affect the normal growth of the seedling.

3. Pruning

After the sapling is planted, when its trunk reaches a height of 50-60 cm, head it back in time. Promptly remove the buds below 30 cm in height, and keep the plump buds from 30-60 cm in height. When new shoots grow to 2 cm, choose 4-5 with relatively wide angles, and select vigorously growing new shoots as the main branches; other new shoots should be pruned off from the base to facilitate the cultivation of strong main branches. After 4 years of planting, crisp red plum enters the initial fruiting stage, and after 6 years it enters the full fruiting stage. At this time, the fruit yield is relatively large, and damage is likely during picking, so short pruning can be carried out.

4. Pest and Disease Control

For pest and disease control, prevention is the priority. In winter, eliminate insect eggs and apply lime sulfur mixture to the base of the trunk. In spring, use trichlorfon powder or phoxim to spray the tree trunk and the surrounding ground, so as to prevent pests from entering the trunk.
