When bagging apples, the benefits are clear: it improves fruit·coloration, prevents pest and disease infection, reduces frost damage, and enhances the fruit's storage quality and market value. So how should the bags be removed after the fruit has been bagged? What should be noted when removing the bags? Let's take a look together.

1. Bag Removal Methods

Bag removal is generally carried out from September to October, with the time chosen between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The order of bag removal is: first the inner canopy, then the outer periphery; first the densely foliated trees, then the well-lit trees; first the mid-to-low-grade bags, then the high-grade bags. When removing bags, first tear open the outer bag, and after waiting 3-5 days, remove the inner bag. If it is a single-layer bag, tear the bottom or lengthwise into several strips, and after waiting 3-5 days, remove it entirely, to avoid sunscald from direct sun exposure. When removing bags, try not to touch the fruit. If it rains, the bag removal time should be appropriately postponed.

2. Management After Bag Removal

After bag removal, spray once with agents such as JunDuQing and MieSaoLi to prevent bacterial infection and pest damage. At the same time, remove the leaves around the fruit, and after half a month, remove the leaves that affect light penetration, to promote sufficient light for fruit coloration. When the sunny side of the fruit reaches the coloration standard, turn the shaded side toward the sun so that the fruit colors evenly all over. After bag removal, the fruit skin is relatively tender and has low resistance to pests and diseases, with a higher chance of infection, so pesticides should be sprayed to prevent this. After bag removal, spray with a chelated calcium fertilizer that has high calcium content and is easily absorbed, to prevent fruit cracking. Note that Bordeaux mixture should not be sprayed after bag removal.

3. Precautions

Avoid removing all bags at once. Always remove the outer bag first, and after a few days, remove the bags while avoiding the high temperatures at midday, so as to prevent sunscald on the fruit caused by strong light, which makes the fruit surface unattractive and lowers the marketable rate. Avoid removing bags on overcast or rainy days, as rainwater will cause a rough fruit surface and severe water rust, lowering the appearance quality. Avoid removing leaves without turning the fruit; after 7-8 days from bag removal, once the sunny side has colored, it is best to remove leaves and turn the fruit at the same time, otherwise the sunny side will color too deeply while the shaded side remains pale or colorless. Avoid harvesting all at once; after bag removal, do not harvest all at once, but harvest in stages and batches, harvesting in stages when the standard of full pink coloration is reached. Only in this way can the marketable rate of bagged apples be improved.
