Blueberry is a fruit with high nutritional value and health benefits, with powerful effects, but during cultivation it is attacked by many kinds of viral diseases, which can seriously affect the yield and quality of blueberries. So how should these viral diseases be controlled? Follow the editor to take a look at the control methods for common viral diseases of blueberries.

1. Blueberry scorch virus

This virus can cause the death of leaves and flowers. Different cultivars differ slightly in their resistance to it. Symptoms on affected plants appear mainly during the flowering period in early spring, mainly showing as flower wilt, with a small amount of death, and the leaf margins of old leaves. As the plant grows, some cultivars show continuous branch dieback, and some with poorer disease resistance often show death of most leaves, with the plant dying within 3-6 years, while some cultivars with strong disease resistance only show leaf chlorosis symptoms.

Control methods: The best way to prevent it is to plant virus-free seedlings at present. When planting, make sure there are no such problems nearby. Once plants are found to be affected, they should be removed and burned immediately, and aphids must be strictly controlled.

2. Blueberry leaf mottle disease

So far, this disease occurs in relatively few areas, but once it breaks out the damage is extremely severe. Within a few years of onset, the plant stems die until the whole plant dies. Different cultivars have different disease resistance and show different symptoms. Some affected plants show death of perennial stems after 5-6 years, with new branches stunted and deformed, and spots on the leaves; some cultivars show milder symptoms, with less stem death, but the tree grows stunted, and because the internodes are shortened, the leaves are small and yellow-green.

Control methods: This disease is mainly spread by the pollination activities of bees and bumblebees. It can be controlled by cutting off the transmission route, but the best method is to remove the diseased plants.

3. Mosaic disease

Mosaic disease is also a disease that commonly occurs in blueberry production, and can reduce yield by more than 15%. The main symptoms are leaves turning yellow-green or yellow and developing spots or ring-shaped scorch, sometimes with purple lesions. Symptoms also differ from year to year; in one year symptoms may be severe, but the next year no symptoms appear.

Control methods: This disease mainly relies on aphids and virus-carrying seedlings for transmission, so using insecticides to control aphids and cultivating virus-free seedlings can effectively prevent the occurrence of this disease.

4. Red ringspot disease

This disease is one of the more common diseases in blueberry-producing areas of the United States. Once it breaks out it can cause at least a quarter of the yield loss. When it occurs, the leaves on the branches often show ring-shaped red spots with green in the middle. In the high-temperature season, the upper half of old leaves also shows this symptom.

Control methods: This disease is mainly spread by mealybugs, and another way is transmission by virus-carrying seedlings. The main control methods are using virus-free seedlings and controlling mealybugs.
