How to Plant Durian Seeds? Detailed Guide to the Latest Planting Method
Durian is a tropical fruit. Although some people cannot stand its smell, durian still has a large group of loyal fans. After eating durian, you can grow it from the seeds, but it can only bear fruit in tropical regions; in other regions it may grow into a plant, but it will not bear fruit. That does not matter though, you can grow durian as a potted plant for ornamental purposes. So now let us look at how to plant durian seeds.
1. Treating the seeds
Take the seeds out, wash off the sticky material on the surface, then scoop them out and drain them, and soak them in warm water kept at 25 degrees. After soaking, the seeds will gradually absorb water, and slowly the seed coat will swell from the water and split open. Then scoop out the seeds, put them in a container with a wet cloth, in a state of shallow water soaking, and keep them moist; this way the seeds will sprout within two days. Do not plant them as soon as they sprout; wait until the sprout is 2 cm long before planting.
2. Soil preparation
If you are in a region where it can bear fruit, you can prepare for open-field planting; you need to clear the land, plow it, apply fertilizer, mix the soil and leave the topsoil to cover it, then till the whole soil finely. You can also add humus soil to improve the soil and build a seedbed. For potted planting, prepare a container; a clay pot is best. For the soil you can choose sandy loam, mixed with humus soil, river sand, peat and the like, and dry the soil in the sun to disinfect it. All soil can be sprayed with carbendazim for disinfection.
3. Planting method
Plant the seeds in the soil with the sprouting point facing down and the root facing down; in a seedbed they can be planted in rows; for pots you can plant one or two sprouted seeds, also with the root facing down. After planting, cover with about 2 cm of soil, then cover with a little fine sand, which keeps in moisture and allows air through; a seedbed can be directly covered with fine sand to help it grow and sprout quickly. After finishing, spray water evenly and carefully until the soil is thoroughly wet.
4. Care and management
After the first watering, pay attention to management and avoid direct strong light; for a seedbed you can build a canopy made of straw to block the sunlight. You can also put up a shade net for shade. For pots, just place them indoors, or in a shaded but ventilated place where the temperature is not low. After planting, watering about once every few days is enough; as long as there is 60% humidity it is fine. Too wet.
Durian seeds can be planted in suitable regions, sprout, grow and bear fruit, but in some regions they may not bear fruit, or may not grow very large, so in fact they can be grown as potted ornamentals. So the seeds can be planted directly. You can refer to the process above.
