There are quite a few varieties of pomelo, and Huyou is one of them. The most famous one is Changshan Huyou, which is rich in multiple vitamins, the 16 amino acids the human body needs, and various trace elements. It has high nutritional value, a full and plump flesh, is crisp, tender and juicy, and also has the effects of cooling the body and reducing internal heat, and relieving cough and reducing phlegm. So how should Huyou be planted? Let's take a look together.

1. Site Selection and Afforestation

Huyou is a subtropical evergreen fruit tree with the characteristics of tolerance to barren soil and cold. It grows vigorously and is extensively managed, and it is not strict about soil requirements. Generally, a mountain area or basin bottom with convenient transportation and good drainage can be chosen for afforestation and planting. Before planting, prepare the land and apply base fertilizer at the same time. Generally, 3000-5000 kg of farmyard manure is applied per mu, and then the planting holes are dug.

2. Planting

Huyou grows vigorously and has a large canopy. Generally, a grafted tree will enter the full bearing period after 6-7 years, so the planting density should not be too high. Generally, 35-45 plants are planted per mu. It is usually done in March or November in spring, and planting in early to mid-March is better. It should be done on a cloudy day or in the evening on a sunny day, and it is not suitable to plant on rainy days or when the soil is too wet. In addition, it should be noted that Huyou has the ability to bear fruit parthenocarpically, and can produce seedless fruit without pollination, but cross-pollination gives a higher fruit-setting rate and larger fruit, so an appropriate number of pollinizer trees should be arranged.

3. Shaping and Pruning

When the trunk of a young tree grows to about 0.5 m, the trunk should be headed. For young trees, cultivate the main branches and select and retain secondary main branches, and at the same time remove flower buds in time to reduce the nutrient consumption of the tree. Control the plant height within a 1.5-15 m framework so that the canopy is compact and the tree shape is open. After that, cultivate the extension shoots of the main branches and secondary main branches so that the branches are evenly distributed, with ventilation and light penetration, and grow robustly. During the full bearing period, auxiliary pruning work such as bud removal and shoot control, pinching, and cutting off vigorous water shoots, dead branches, and diseased and pest-infested branches should be carried out.

4. Pest and Disease Control

Huyou rarely suffers from pests and diseases. Generally, scale insects harm the fruit and leaves in July-August, and mites, aphids, and fruit borers harm the branches and leaves from May to September. Control should focus on prevention. In late March, dimethoate can be used to control scale insects, sprayed once every 7-10 days, 3 times in a row; in April, dimethoate and fenvalerate can be used to control mites, aphids, fruit borers, etc.
