How to Fertilize Strawberries in Winter? A Detailed Guide to the Latest Methods
Strawberries taste sweet and sour and are deeply loved by everyone. Many growers now also cultivate them in the winter season, but with reduced sunlight hours in winter, strawberries can only obtain enough nutrients for growth through fertilization. So how should strawberries be fertilized in winter? Follow the editor and take a look.
1. Seedling fertilizer
Seedling fertilizer should be mainly organic fertilizers such as compost, farmyard manure and cake fertilizer, with an appropriate amount of microbial inoculant added to improve the fertilizer efficiency of the organic fertilizer, and then a small amount of chemical fertilizers such as superphosphate and potassium sulfate applied. In order to promote flower bud differentiation of the seedlings, an appropriate amount of base fertilizer should also be applied on the temporary planting bed, but not too much. In addition, during the middle stage of temporary planting, a nitrogen fertilizer can be applied once to promote strong and healthy seedling growth, generally applying 5-10 kg of urea or 150-250 kg of decomposed human feces and urine per mu.
2. Base fertilizer
After planting, strawberries enter the flowering and fruiting stage, which is relatively long and requires a large amount of fertilizer, so base fertilizer needs to be applied before planting. Generally, 5000 kg of farmyard manure per mu is applied, plus 6-8 kg of microbes. After mixing them evenly, it alleviates soil continuous cropping obstacles and also improves the utilization rate of farmyard manure. If the soil is acidic, 50 kg of quicklime per mu can also be applied to adjust the pH.
3. Reasonable topdressing
After each harvest, topdressing should also be done once. The specific amount of fertilizer should be determined according to the amount of fruit harvested. The more fruit harvested, the more fertilizer applied; conversely, the less fruit harvested, the less fertilizer applied. At the early flowering stage, 10-15 kg of compound fertilizer and 200-300 kg of decomposed human feces and urine should be applied per mu. After that, topdressing should be carried out according to actual conditions during fruit enlargement and harvesting. Throughout the entire growth period of strawberries, topdressing is needed 4-5 times to meet the needs of plant growth and fruit development.
4. Foliar fertilizer
After strawberries set fruit, plant growth and fruit enlargement require a large amount of nutrients. At this time, the nutrients absorbed by the root system may not keep up with plant consumption, so foliar fertilizer needs to be sprayed in time, generally spraying 0.2%-0.3% monopotassium phosphate and 0.5% urea. In addition, to prevent fruit rot caused by calcium deficiency, attention should be paid to the supply of soluble calcium, more organic fertilizer should be applied to increase the soil's organic matter content, and nitrogen fertilizer application should be controlled to avoid excessive vegetative growth, which is unfavorable for fruit enlargement.
