If bananas do not emerge their bunch until after the end of October, they often suffer frost damage, which results in undersized fruit, low yield, and poor quality, a condition growers call "snow banana." So for late bunch emergence, how should late-emerging bananas be managed? Follow the editor to learn about it.

1. Topdressing with fruit-swelling fertilizer

After bananas grow short leaves, they will soon bolt and flower, so fruit-swelling fertilizer should be applied early to supply sufficient nutrients to the banana, so that the fruit fills out as quickly as possible. For the fruit-swelling fertilizer, quick-acting fertilizer should be used; generally apply 0.4 kg of potassium sulfate compound fertilizer per plant in a shallow ring-shaped trench about 1 meter from the banana stem, and combine it with intertillage and earthing up. Alternatively, human excrement and urine can be applied at 10-12 kg per plant, once every 7-10 days, for 2-3 consecutive times.

2. Spraying foliar fertilizer

Spraying foliar fertilizer on bananas can prevent premature leaf senescence, enhance the plant's cold resistance, and make the fruit early-ripening, plump, and clean yellow. After bunch emergence, spray 400 g of monopotassium phosphate per mu, diluted in 100 kg of water, and spray as evenly and thoroughly as possible. It is best to do this on cloudy days or after 3 p.m. on sunny days, once a week, for 2-3 consecutive times.

3. Irrigation to prevent freezing

In winter, the air is dry and banana plants consume a lot of water, showing symptoms of water shortage and being highly susceptible to freeze damage. Therefore, irrigate promptly before or after frost, and keep the soil moist at ordinary times. This is an important measure for preventing freezing in bananas.

4. Smoking to prevent freezing

On the night of the frost, you can mix sawdust, rice husks, or the dry residue left after rural black fungus production with diesel oil and set it on fire to produce smoke, so as to raise the temperature of the microclimate in the banana orchard and reduce the degree to which the bananas are frozen. You can also spray water on the plants on the morning of the second day after the frost to wash off the frost water on the plants and leaves, minimizing freeze damage as much as possible.
