How to propagate Magnolia denudata? A detailed guide to common propagation methods
1. Grafting method
(1) Timing: Generally, we choose the "approach grafting" method. With this method, propagation can be carried out from spring to autumn, that is, during its main growing season. Relatively speaking, however, April to July is more common.
(2) Specific method: For this method, it is best to choose a point about 70 cm above the ground. After binding, wrap it with a ball of mud and cover the outside with leaves; this is done to prevent rain from washing it away. After about 60 days, we can cut it off. This is a method with a relatively high survival rate, and it is also quite commonly used.
2. Layering method
(1) Ordinary layering: If you choose this method, it is best to do it in February or March. Cut about halfway through the base of the selected branch, then cut a short section upward, insert a piece of tile in between, and gently press it into the soil, being careful not to break it. Then fix it in place with wire to prevent it from springing up. After that, pile soil on top.
(2) Air layering: We need to select strong branches free of pests and diseases as material; tender branches are best, and the diameter needs to be 1.5 to 2 cm. After selecting, cut a slit at the fork, cover it with a bamboo tube, fill it with substrate, and tie it firmly on the outside with string. Be careful not to touch it, spray a small amount of water, and keep it at a suitable moisture level. Around May of the following year, it can be removed and planted out.
3. Other methods
Other methods such as sowing and cuttings can also be used for propagation, but they are not very common.
