How to grow Christmas cactus well? Detailed care methods and precautions
Christmas cactus is also known as Christmas cactus, crab claw lotus and fairy finger flower, belongs to the Cactaceae family, Schlumbergera genus, tender green, and its blooming coincides with New Year's Day and the Spring Festival. The flowers are delicate and graceful, bright and charming, and it is one of the ideal potted flowers in winter, so how do you grow Christmas cactus? When cultivating it, what precautions should be noted?
How to grow Christmas cactus
1. Soil first for growing flowers
In the cultivation methods for Christmas cactus, the choice of soil is crucial. Especially for beginner flower growers, a pot of good soil is very important for whether the flower can be grown well. To grow Christmas cactus, you can use a relatively fertile mixed soil of leaf mold, peat and coarse sand. The pH should be kept between pH5.5-6.5.
2. Care environment
The cultivation environment for Christmas cactus requires semi-shade and humidity. In summer, avoid scorching sun exposure and rain; in winter, it requires warmth and sufficient light. The suitable temperature for the growing period of Christmas cactus is 18-23°C, and the flowering temperature is preferably 10-15°C, not exceeding 25°C, with maintaining 15°C being best, and the winter temperature not lower than 10°C. Christmas cactus is a short-day plant, so it can only form buds and bloom under short-day conditions.
3. Watering
Watering has always been an endless topic, and there are always flower growers who cannot get it right. When Christmas cactus lacks water, it will not die so easily, but when waterlogged, it is very easy to die. Therefore, when watering Christmas cactus, flower growers must prefer less rather than more, and do not let excessive diligence lead to constant watering.
4. Propagation
The most commonly used method for propagating Christmas cactus is cuttings. The method is very simple: take a few stem segments and insert them for cuttings, and the survival rate is very high.
5. Flowering period management
The flowering period of Christmas cactus is a bit delicate, and water should be controlled and fertilizer stopped. During the flowering period, Christmas cactus is especially sensitive to water. Too much water easily causes bud drop, and in severe cases it can also cause root rot of the rootstock, leading to plant death; lack of water easily makes the flower segments wilt, and the flower buds cannot develop and mature. The correct method is: keep the potting soil in a slightly moist state, preferably so that it does not scatter when pinched by hand. Every day at noon, you can use clean water at the same temperature as the room for misting, which can achieve twice the result with half the effort. If the potting soil is too dry, do not water it thoroughly all at once either; water it gradually. Watering too much at one time will cause the plant to drop buds and stem segments.
Precautions for growing Christmas cactus:
1. Do not move the position frequently. Once you find a suitable environment, keep it there all the time. Especially during the bud stage, do not casually move the flower pot position, as it can easily cause flower bud drop.
2. Although Christmas cactus likes a semi-shady environment, if you want it to bloom, it needs short-day conditions.
