A Detailed Guide to Common Medications and Medication Precautions on Poultry Farms
Poultry farm commonly used medications are mainly: various antibiotics such as penicillin, streptomycin, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, tetracycline, 7-chloramphenicol, synthomycin, neomycin, kanamycin, polymyxin, gentamicin, erythromycin, kitasamycin, bacitracin, nystatin, etc., sulfonamide drugs (such as sulfathiazole, sulfadiazine, sulfamerazine, sulfadimidine, sulfafurazole, sulfaquinoxaline, etc.), and nitrofuran drugs (such as nitrofurazone, furazolidone, etc.).
How are poultry medications used?
1. The flock is affected by various stress factors throughout the entire rearing cycle, so at each vaccination, flock transfer, weather change, etc., anti-stress multivitamins and medications against chronic respiratory disease should be given (such as Taiweisu, Nuode, Dalibu, Chuanshuping, etc.) to minimize the influence of various stress factors.
2. Prevention first, treat according to the symptoms, and choose a suitable method of administration; in clinical practice, the method of administering medication to the whole group through drinking water is often used. When administering medication, it is best to give it as a single dose; before administration, water should be withheld, and the daily dosage should be calculated accurately.
3. In clinical medication, combination drug therapy is often used, but attention should be paid to the compatibility between drugs.
4. The effectiveness of medication on a poultry farm is built on the foundation of good feeding management. The use of drugs can only exert their therapeutic effect on the basis of good feeding management; the time drugs remain in the body is limited, and they cannot persist in the body for long. On heavily contaminated poultry farms, once medication is stopped, the disease can recur.
5. Correctly understand the guiding role of drug sensitivity testing for medication in production. Most bacteria isolated clinically have a certain degree of resistance to drugs; screening out sensitive drugs through drug sensitivity testing reduces the blindness of medication use and provides good guidance for farmers in using medication. However, when selecting drugs clinically, we must consider not only the sensitivity of the drug to the bacteria, but also the drug's compatibility, dosage form, and its absorption, distribution, transformation and duration in the body; otherwise, drugs that are highly sensitive in drug sensitivity testing may show poor results in clinical treatment.
6. Pay attention to medication during the first five days of chicks. In the production process, vertically transmitted diseases (such as pullorum disease, chronic respiratory disease of chickens, etc.) are very common, so proper medication during the first five days of chicks is very important; choosing efficient, broad-spectrum drugs (such as Bingjing, Pushaping) can effectively cut off vertically transmitted bacterial diseases, purify the flock, and reduce the amount of medication used for the flock in the future.
