How to Sprout Bitter Gourd (Bitter Melon) Seeds in Autumn and Winter: A Detailed Guide
The autumn planting period for bitter gourd is generally July-August; the climate during this period is suitable, it is easy to manage, the harvest period is long, and yields are high. The winter planting period for bitter gourd is November-December; because winter temperatures are low, film mulching should be used when planting, along with integrated water and fertilizer irrigation under the film. This not only preserves fertilizer and water, raises soil temperature, promotes normal growth and development of seedlings and increases yields, but also saves labor and costs.
Because bitter gourd seeds have a relatively thick seed coat and do not absorb water easily, using hot-water treatment and soaking to sprout the seeds can promote water absorption and germination, meet the temperature conditions required for seed germination, increase the germination rate, and also kill pathogens and insect eggs on the seed surface, thereby achieving seed disinfection.
Choosing the time to sprout bitter gourd seeds:
Soaking and sprouting should be carried out 5 to 6 days before sowing.
Bitter gourd seed sprouting method one:
Prepare warm water at about 55°C and put it in a thermos bottle or another container that can retain heat; place the bitter gourd seeds in a gauze bag and wash them with clean water, gently rubbing the seeds while washing to remove the water-resistant substances on their surface; soak the washed seeds in the prepared warm water, keeping them warm for 10 minutes while stirring constantly, then add cold water to bring the water temperature down to 25°C-30°C, soak for more than 12 hours, remove the seeds, wrap them in a damp cloth, place them in a box, cover with a damp cloth, and put them in a place that can maintain a temperature of about 30°C and sufficient humidity to sprout.
During the sprouting process, check twice a day to prevent both water loss and seed rot caused by excessive moisture. After 2 to 3 days, when the seeds have grown radicles of about 3 mm, they can be sown.
Bitter gourd seed sprouting method two:
Soak the seeds in warm water at about 55°C, let it cool naturally and continue soaking for more than 12 hours, remove the seeds and wash them in clean water, slightly break open the hilum of the bitter gourd seeds with your teeth or needle-nose pliers, then place them in a spot that can maintain a temperature of about 30°C and sufficient humidity to sprout; when the seeds have sprouted about 3 mm, they can be sown.
