A Detailed Guide to Growing and Caring for Forget-Me-Nots at Home
Forget-me-nots bloom with small light blue flowers, fresh and pleasant. They have great ornamental value, and many people ask whether forget-me-nots can be grown at home and how to grow and care for them. In fact, they are extremely adaptable, prefer a dry, cool climate, and are very easy to grow.
1. How to grow forget-me-nots?
Forget-me-nots can be propagated in two ways: by sowing seeds and by tissue culture seedling cultivation. Sowing is generally done from September to January of the following year. The seeds are photophobic, so after broadcasting the seeds, cover them with a little soil and maintain humidity. Under the optimum temperature of 15-20°C, they germinate after 10-15 days. When sowing, be careful that the temperature does not exceed 25°C. After the sprouts emerge, ventilation is needed, and the seedlings are planted out when they have more than 5 true leaves. Tissue culture seedlings propagated by tissue culture technology are planted out when they have 4-6 leaves.
2. Forget-me-not growing methods and care
1. Soil
Forget-me-nots have low soil requirements, but a loose, breathable sandy loam with a deep soil layer is best. Before planting, adjust the soil pH so that it is slightly alkaline. Base fertilizer accounts for 70% of the total fertilizer used. Calculated per 100 sq m of planting bed, it should contain 1.75 kg of nitrogen, 2.0 kg of phosphorus, 2.1 kg of potassium, and 0.14 kg of boron. Use slow-release compound fertilizer and decomposed organic fertilizer as the base fertilizer, and after application, turn them evenly into the soil. Level the soil and make beds, with the bed height at about 20 cm. The planting spacing is 30 cm × 40 cm, in staggered double rows. If planting 3 rows, arrange the 3 rows in a staggered pattern, which helps ventilation and light penetration. Do not plant the seedlings too deep; the planting depth should be such that the root crown is level with the soil surface. After planting, water thoroughly in time.
2. Fertilization
Regarding the total amount of fertilizer used during the growing period of forget-me-nots, 70% of the nitrogen, potassium and so on is applied as base fertilizer, 30% as top dressing, and all phosphorus fertilizer is applied as base fertilizer. Top dressing is generally applied once per season. Applying potassium fertilizer and boron fertilizer during the flowering period helps improve the quality and yield of cut flowers. Forget-me-nots prefer a dry environment with good drainage and are averse to waterlogging. The amount of watering should be properly controlled throughout the entire growth period; otherwise, it will lead to a decline in flower quality and yield.
3. Temperature
Forget-me-nots prefer a cool environment and are afraid of high-temperature weather. During cultivation, it is best to keep the ambient temperature at 12-20°C. Forget-me-not plants have strong cold resistance. Under the natural winter temperature conditions in Kunming, some varieties can overwinter outdoors. For most varieties, as long as the root system has grown fully before winter, even if all the aboveground leaves die, the perennial roots will still sprout and bloom in the following spring. However, flowering in forget-me-nots is extremely sensitive to low temperatures. Only when the daytime temperature reaches above 20°C and the nighttime temperature is not lower than 10°C can the flowering stems grow and bloom.
4. Light
Forget-me-nots must grow under sufficient sunlight to grow normally. If the environment is shaded, the clumps may be lush, but they produce few flowering stems. Therefore, the plants should receive sunlight for more than 4 hours per day. If full sun can be ensured, they will grow even better.
5. Pest and disease control
Forget-me-not diseases include gray mold, powdery mildew, and viral diseases. Gray mold can be controlled by spraying 800-1000 times diluted chlorothalonil or thiophanate-methyl continuously 3-4 times. Powdery mildew can be controlled by spraying fenarimol and similar products. For viral diseases, the main control measures are promptly removing and burning diseased plants and spraying insecticides to prevent insects from transmitting the disease. Scale insects are the most common pest of Monstera deliciosa; when few in number, they can be cleaned off with an old toothbrush and then sprayed with a 1000-fold dilution of 40% omethoate emulsifiable concentrate.
3. Main values of forget-me-nots
