Celery: Benefits, Market Prices and Seedling Raising Methods Explained
Celery comes in three types: water celery, dry celery and western celery. They have similar functions and are a commonly used auxiliary ingredient in people's stir-frying. So do you know what benefits it has? How are the market prices? If you want to grow it, how do you raise the seedlings? It is reported that celery is rich in nutrients, and eating it often is very beneficial for preventing high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis, and it also has auxiliary therapeutic effects.
1. What benefits does celery have?
1. Calms the liver and lowers blood pressure
Celery contains acidic blood-pressure-lowering components, and intravenous injection has a clear blood-pressure-lowering effect in rabbits and dogs; vascular perfusion can cause blood vessels to dilate; using the aortic arch perfusion method, it can counteract the blood pressure-raising response caused by nicotine and lobeline, and can cause blood pressure to drop. Clinically it is effective for primary, pregnancy-induced and menopausal high blood pressure in celery (Apium graveolens).
2. Calming and soothing the nerves
An alkaline component isolated from celery seeds has a sedative effect on animals and can have a calming effect on the human body; oral administration of apiin or apigenin can counteract cocaine-induced excitement in mice, helping to stabilize emotions and eliminate irritability.
3. Diuretic and reduces swelling
Celery contains effective diuretic components, eliminating water and sodium retention in the body, promoting diuresis and reducing swelling. Clinically, the effective rate of celery water decoction is 85.7%, and it can treat chyluria.
4. Prevents and fights cancer
Celery is a high-fiber food. Through digestion in the intestines it produces a substance called lignin or intestinal lipids. This type of substance is an antioxidant, and at high concentrations it can inhibit cancer-causing substances produced by intestinal bacteria. It can also speed up the transit time of feces in the intestines, reducing contact between carcinogens and the colonic mucosa, thereby achieving the goal of preventing colon cancer.
5. Nourishes blood and tonifies deficiency
Celery has a relatively high iron content and can replenish the loss from women's menstrual blood. Eating it can prevent pale, dry skin and a dull complexion, and can also make the eyes bright and the hair black and shiny.

3. How do you raise celery seedlings?
1. Seedling raising method:
The celery seedling raising method is related to its variety characteristics and crop rotation arrangement. For late-autumn delayed cultivation, varieties such as Ventura and Nencui are generally chosen. The sowing period is selected in mid-to-late June, and the seedling raising method adopts plug tray substrate sowing + shade net covering for cooling + agricultural film covering to avoid rain.
2. Seedling raising techniques:
(1) Selection of plug trays and substrate. Use 288-hole or 128-hole plug trays. The substrate can be peat, vermiculite and perlite in a ratio of 3:1:1. The substrate ratio is prepared by volume. Add 25 kg of expanded chicken manure per cubic meter of substrate, stir evenly, then add 100 g of carbendazim or 200 g of chlorothalonil for substrate disinfection. When filling, remove clumped substrate and chicken manure. Fill the seedling substrate to 3/4 of the plug cell and tamp it firm.
(3) Seed treatment. For late-autumn delayed cultivation of celery, the sowing period is in mid-to-late June, which is a high-temperature season. Before sowing, the seeds should undergo low-temperature germination promotion treatment. The specific method is: before sowing, sun-dry the seeds for 0.5 to 1 hour, then soak them in water for 12 to 16 hours. After rinsing clean, place them in a refrigerator or cold storage room at 10 to 15 for germination promotion. When at least 50% of the seeds have sprouted white, they can be sown.
(4) Sowing. Use manual sowing. Wet the substrate 1 day before sowing, place the seeds flat in the cells, 1 seed per cell. For seeds with longer sprouts, insert them straight into the cells, then cover with a layer of vermiculite, and moisten the cell surface with a 6000-fold atonik solution, which promotes germination, makes germination uniform, and strengthens roots and seedlings.
Growing celery is also relatively simple. As long as you do the daily crop cultivation work well, you can harvest good celery.
